1 month post op and kind of struggling

Recommended Posts

okay y'all. tomorrow on the 18th i'll be exactly a month post op. which is exciting for the most part. im in that annoying 3 weeks stall first of all which ive been reading about lately. i saw my doctor last week which he said was early to have an appointment but they set it up so i went anyway. he told me i wasnt getting enough calories per day. im supposed to be having atleast 1000 a day he said by now but i've only been having like 300 a day. as everyone who has had this surgery they know what i mean when they dont actually feel hunger anymore. which is still super weird to me. but almost every single time i eat i vomit. it doesn't hurt that bad i just know that its weird and i dont like it lol someone please if you have any advice on something i can do to get proper nutrition in without vomitting everytime i eat that would be awesome. i've been lacking on my Protein shakes but i'm working on it. any advice would be appreciated.

did you explain to your doctor that you were vomiting after eating and that's why you're not getting enough calories in? perhaps you can get a prescription for an anti-nausea medication that will help you. it's so important to get your Protein in, and if you don't eat enough calories, your body will hold on to what it already has and it will negatively impact your weight loss.

Hmm 1000 seems like a lot to me. I'm 13 months post op and usually don't break 1000. But at the same time 300 does seem low and the vomiting is not really something I experienced. What did he say about that?

I had an issue with vomiting in the hospital so the doctor sent me home with erm...suppositories of compazine. I haven't needed them. But 300 calories seems very very low even if your are completely sedentary.

he told me that i had to really try to get more calories in and i did tell the nutritionist that i vomit alot and she said thats normal and that my eyes are still bigger than my stomach which is true because i always eat like 1 or 2 to many bites and end up throwing up. i dunno its weird and my stomach itself doesnt hurt at all i feel like its making a great recovery from the surgery its just im always vommitting but i know its because i take to many bites before realizing it. its just hard guys im sure you all know.

At 1 month out I could only get about 500 in on a good day. I am 3 month and now kissing 1,000. Do what your body needs; just be sure you make good food choices and keep up on the Vitamins and moving. Be sure you keep your Doc and NUT abreast of your issues. Good luck!

Hi angelamarie374,

I am having the same problem. I can only manage 500 - 800 calories daily. And I exercise 45 minutes for 4 days per week. I know my calories intake is low and I have tried this week to up my calorie intake by having whey Protein shakes, homemade Soups with Marvell ( power milk), cheese with mash potatoes or puree vegetables. I do vomit but I think its because my stomach can't handle certain foods and also vomit when I eat fast. . I know my stomach with settle in the forthcoming weeks or months so I'm not going to great to stressed on my calories intake for first 1-2 months. My weight lost for this week was just a 1Lb which is result of my low calories intake.

At one month I also had problems...trouble eating and drinking. Lots of nausea. Became dangerously anemic. Nine weeks now and I have to be careful. One too many bites will result in throwing up. Only a handful of foods are tolerable to my stomach. If I get in 600 calories it's a good day. Just trying to get stronger, day by day.

Are you eating too fast? Are you giving it time for food to make it to your sleeve before you swallow another bite? I can feel my food food travel down and hit my sleeve. It hasn't happened often but there's been a few times I took one too many bites and it came up. Listen to your body. Best of luck!

The doc is right. You're not getting nearly enough nutrition.

If you can't hit his goal of 1,000 (more than my doc wanted at 1 month), then go for 600 to 800 calories/day.

And you already know what you should be doing ... eat more slowly, chew your food a little more than you are now, and eat a couple of bites fewer at a single sitting than you are now.

Also try adding a couple of Snacks in each day -- Greek yogurt would be great, since it requires no chewing (your tummy will think it's just another liquid). That's 120 calories and 12 grams of Protein for 5.3 ounces of Dannon Oikos vanila yogurt.

Keep learning. Keep doing better. That's all there is to this.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
