Hello all! My name is Sandy and I finally have my surgery date, November 20th. I am excited! Since I received word of my surgery date I have become overly emotional about everything. I am not sure if it is fear of the unknown, relief that I am finally moving forward, or scared of how I will react to losing weight. I am wondering if anyone else is feeling this way, scared of what it will feel like to not be heavy. My weight has been almost like a security blanket. Sounds a little crazy, right? However, I am ready for November 20th to get here!!! :)

Hello all! My name is Sandy and I finally have my surgery date, November 20th. I am excited! Since I received word of my surgery date I have become overly emotional about everything. I am not sure if it is fear of the unknown, relief that I am finally moving forward, or scared of how I will react to losing weight. I have not always been obese but I don't remember what it felt like to not carry around excess weight. I've been a big girl for the past 19 years or so. I am wondering if anyone else is feeling this way, scared of what it will feel like to not be heavy. My weight has been almost like a security blanket. Sounds a little crazy, right?

SandyS,

You are NOT crazy at all. I too am scared. My original date was set for November 20th. Now, my doctors are shooting for later this month. My doctor is trying to plan his vacation and scheduling everyone he can early that already has insurance confirmation.

I am very nervous. I haven't been thin since childhood.

I have major fears of my friends and family not accepting the new me. I am glad you're on here. The support in this group is awesome.

When do you start your pre-op surgery diet? What does it look like? :)

Lost1,

Changing your date would be exciting! I know for me the past seven months of supervised visits, blood work, and body scans have kept my mind busy. Now I feel like I need time to mentally prepare. I am so ready though!

I start my pre-op diet November 6th. My diet will be four Protein shakes at 100 calories per shake and one small meal of 600 calories. I have already done this because I gained 11 pounds over six months and my physician put me on it for my last supervised month. I lost 15 pounds but I have gained a few back since I've been eating everything I want. Sort of like my last milkshake, my last cupcake, and all of the bad things I will never eat again. The funny thing is I've felt so sick this past week from eating junk food!

I am excited for you! I am glad I found this support group! Keep in touch. Let us all know how your surgery went. :)

The road your traveling is filled with so many emotions that it's hard to keep them straight. I totally understand your weight being a security blanket and shedding it is daunting. Take it one day at a time (one minute at a time if you have to), you will have time to adjust to the new you. Soon enough you won't need your security blanket.

I imagine shedding the weight will feel soooo good!!! I am feeling great today! Wishing November 20th were tomorrow. :) One day at a time. Or as a friend of mine has said "just keep swimming".

Sandy S

I am in the beginning phases of my 3 month multi disciplinary program and am so excited to be changing my life, scared about the surgery itself, anxious about the post op weight loss, and worried about my family comparing me to my sister who had Gastric Bypass 2 years ago and be disappointed if I don't do as well as her or lose as fast as her. I can totally understand the emotional storm that accompanies not only the surgery but the lifestyle change that comes with it

Don't be scared???? I have never had surgery before and after it was over I'd do it again and again it was so darn easy. The gas is the only hard part lol. Oh and the pain drugs where awesome I had Dilaudid with anti-nauseous and it didn't make me sick or feel to weird. It really took the pain away. Good luck it's a breeze????????

I think what your feeling is normal. I didn't have any fear or anxiety prior to surgery. And I think that is more unusual.

Aug 2013 250lbs

Surgery jan 21/14 210lbs

Oct 2014 147lbs

It is a strange feeling being this size. I sometimes see my reflection and think who is that. You will have many different emotions and feelings throughout the course of your journey. I also used my weight as a security of sorts. My life is so totally different now. I am learning to like myself again. It's definitely an emotional journey as well as physical. You will succeed and we are all behind you!

Wow, I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one with all the emotions. I'm happy to see so many of you with Nov. surgery dates. I just had posted a new discussion looking for people going in for surgery in November. I'm scheduled for Nov.11th. I start my pre-op diet in another week or so (need to check my calendar).

How do you get one of the body weight tickers? Is it a phone app?

It's great to know we're all in this together. Can't wait to buy my first pair of "skinny jeans"!!!!!!

I'm glad I can connect with so many people who are feeling the same and people I can go through this journey with! November is fast approaching! I've been looking at cute summer dresses for next year and daydreaming about how I will be able to wear them. I can't wait! The simple things make me smile. :)

Sandy,

Good luck on your surgery today. I know you will do amazing. It was probably very rough emotionally, but it is for everyone. I am a year out and down over 210lbs. and I still have trouble viewing my body being the size it is. I still react as if I am so much heavier at times. It is a learning process. What will make it all truely amazing is when you begin doing things you never thought possible or you begin doing things you never thought you'd be doing again. I can't wait to see what you will do once you lose you weight. Your journey is going to be epic.

It is an emotional rollercoaster for most of us. I have never been so diligent in making sure testing and approval processes were moving forward like I did with my WLS process.

I was so delighted when my sister understood when I told her about my fear of losing my invisibility cloak. She just said, "I know, right?" My weight has helped me to feel less visible, less vulnerable. Not that I consciously wanted it for those reasons. I just have become aware that it had that function for me.

I decided to make pre-op diet time the time that I left the fears behind and just focused on the excitement. And I was excited. Even the morning of surgery was like a big family celebration. Now every day is. I feel like I am "finally on my way" instead of postponing things until I'm in a little bit better shape. Healthy changes were always "Soon.... but not today." Now they are "Why not now?" This feels much better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
