It's been a varying group I tell. My work BFF has been super as well as many other coworkers. My hubby has been with me all the way as has my family. I've had a couple people react weird. But mostly everyone has been awesome.

PS I explained the liquids only on hiatal hernia surgery...that you have to shrink your organs so they can get in more easily (true) and the special diet is doctor's orders (true also!!).

PureVida:

I tend to do the same thing you do. Tell those little 'truths' without really telling them anything.

We should be politicians! ha

Another go-to answer for me is:

Being in PAIN, from all that waiting around for surgeries in pain, and all those post-surgeries, OUCH! made me not hungry @ all (true).

Pain eradicates hunger (true). Which did in fact help me with a lot of the WL. Now that the pain's gone, my final stretch is much more of a challenge.

I am nearly one year out. The only ones who know are my husband and one of my siblings. I told no one else. My kids don't even know. I have always been private about it. I feel it is my decision. I don't need any one else judgments. Everyone has to make the decision as to what they are comfortable with though

I told those who supported me and positive people and everyone else can see me lose my weight! ????

Congrats on your upcoming date!!!!

I only told my family, my best friend, and my supervisor and 2 good work friends before surgery.

My thinking was...I will only tell the people who love and care about me. I didn't want to be "monitored" at work and "given the look" when I was eating a square of chocolate.

I say follow your heart and if you feel like telling people, go right ahead, if you don't, then don't.

I have since started a new job. I have told ZERO people at my new job. They see me losing weight but they also see me with my tennis shoes on and walking on my lunch break...so nobody will know here because really, they really have no need to know. : )

I am 18 months out and have only told a handful of people. I'm glad I've kept this under wraps. It's my business how I chose to handle my addiction. I tell people all the time about what I'm eating and my exercise habits. I'm not lying, I'm just choosing not to share info about the band. There is no shame in being a private person.

Until today, only my husband and doctors knew I'm perusing a band. Just told my mom on the phone. Figured it was a good time, since she was already distraught by my brother's announcement he's engaged with a March wedding date. Hehehe! She was actually very supportive and now understands why I will not be accompanying her to a popular, local weight loss center on Monday (for the third time). Phew... I feel better now!

Not sure how many other folks I'll tell. It's not necessarily a "secret," I just don't want to endure uninformed and unsolicited negative commentary. Then again, nobody has tried to derail my train yet. Maybe I will tell everyone, including the UPS man, like @2muchfun. That cracks me up!!! :D

Only my husband knows...my kids know i was in surgery but the deets are not out for them to ask a lot of questions.all they know is i cant eat like i used too... feel it is a need to know basis. Maybe once the weight is gone i will tell people. If they ask. But probably not. I am not that open with people.

My surgery is planned for Nov 11. So far I've told all my friends, all my family, and my small team of co-workers (there's only 10 of us in the office!)

I've found it very liberating and motivating. Everyone has been so happy and supportive of me. I feel like I have this great support network now. I was a little embarrassed to admit I was getting surgery, but I have no regrets about sharing. I only told close family and a few friends while I was deciding, but once surgery was scheduled I was open. Now it's nice, people at work check in on me, and ask questions. I can tell everyone just wants the best.

My parents, my hubby/kids, and sisters. No one else needs to know in my opinion. I've seen people be successful in the past and offer them congratulations only to talk bad about them when they left. Not nice.

I haven't had surgery yet but I haven't told a single person!! Not my parents, friends or anyone at work( there's only 3 of us total). I'm pretty sure my parents would not support me on the surgery since I'm only 25 and complain about not having money a lot ????. They would say I'm taking the easy way out and that I should keep trying, etc.

I have friends but no one really close enough for me to talk to this about, at least in Japan. In the states there's maybe one guy I think would be supportive.

So I'm doing this all by myself. I'll get support from this site when I need it because at least people here can help and everyone has already gone through this or they're in the process.

Only my husband and two best friends know, I'm so excited I want to shout it from the roof tops but I know most people won't be helpful, for instance I'm down the 14 st and having my band fitted this Friday, a few so called friends have said "don't lose no more weight it won't suit you" REALLY!!! Or is it they can't lose any weigh and they don't want me to do well, so because of that I'm not telling anyone else.

Good luck all x

I just told open-minded people, just last Friday I went to lunch with a colleague.

He noticed that I ate so liitle so I just simply told him that I cannot eat a lot because I had a surgery.

He acknowledged the news and didn't have any question or comment.

I think I made the right decision telling this guy lol.

For some people I just don't feel like to share anything personal. I guess I just go with my instinct.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
