What was your Dr pre op testing?

Recommended Posts

Just curious as to what everyone's doctor screened you for to see if you were a candidate for gastric sleeve? I am going to Mexico November 10th to have surgery and they do all my testing the same day I arrive & have surgery. I notice others are being tested in advanced for Vitamin deficiency, amongst other testing and am curious what was your pre requisite to get approved? I plan to go see a naturopath and am seeing my own Dr in Canada for a thorough check up this week. What should I get them to look for? I want to be extra cautious that my body is ready for such a dramatic surgery! Thanks in advanced!

I suggest your taking the bariatric Vitamins (I take Bariatric Advantage) and Calcium citrate to correct any potential nutritional deficiencies.

Obviously all programs are different, but Kaiser took tons and tons of tests. Ones to make sure there is no infection, to make sure there's no anemia, to make sure there's good clotting, I can look mine up on the website and post some more specifics. All my tests are listed there.

Hi guys -

My pre-Op testing is tomorrow - I will have blood work and upper GI xray. Praying it all goes well, my surgery is scheduled for October 27, 2014. I am just hoping nothing prevents it from happening and that all goes well. Ready to be POST-OP!

Interesting questions/statements from family and friends -but I guess they are just concerned for me and haven't thought about this nearly as much as I have so their questions and statements come off flat and some just wrong. I'm good though - I'm in this or the long haul. My Mom is flying in to be with me.. I think my dad may come as well. So should be solid on a support system that first week.

I will also meet with the nutritionist tomorrow as well. Because I'm diabetic - they want me to eat one meal and shakes/liquid the rest of the time. Can't believe its 2 weeks away. 10/13er's are probably coming out of surgery now - pray all went well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Trying to get my lists made and get everything done. Did anyone use Emergency as a Vitamin? What about crushing current meds? What's the story there. I plan to call my pharmacist today to find out about that and will ask at pre-op tomorrow.

Treating myself to a Vitamix - been wanting one forever but couldn't get my mind around paying $500 for a blender. Well, now that I will have to eat puree's and mushy's - I've found an excuse. Looking for that online today!!!! Its all about the upside here :).

Okay - I'm just droning on... have a great day all.

I had an endoscopy to check for any polyps or gastric issues and later this week I go for blood work, ekg and chest x-ray. These are all required by my surgeon for all his WLS patients If you do not currently have sleep apnea I would ask about having a sleep study. This is also a requirement by my surgeon but since I already have sleep apnea and am on a c-pap, I didn't need to have one done.

The Dr. Ordered the following test.

Endoscopy , Pulmonary, Psychiatrist, Bloodwork, Chest X-ray and

3 Weight Loss Meetings, Nutritionist. And my Pre-op Diet was just for 3 days before my surgery date. I was sleeved on 9/24. My post-op appt was 10/2.. I loss 20 pounds so far.my weight b4 surgery was 220 on 10/02 i weight 200. Next appt 11/4.. I don't weight myself. I prefer the Dr. Weighing me.. It hasn't been easy, had a horrible time with getting Water and Protein in.. But I'm slowly getting there. I have no regrets..

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
