Surgery next week but freaking out a bit

Recommended Posts

HI, i am having my surgery next Wednesday (22nd) and i was pretty cool about it all knowing that the long term goal is going to be amazing. But over the weekend a few people have been really negative with horrible stories of hair falling out, not getting enough nutrition and always being sick and wondering - is it really that bad?. Could really do with the support.

Just had the surgery last week. Feeling fine....little weak from clear liquid diet but walked all around costco just fine. I think it is important to take Vitamins, especially Biotin and keep Protein intake up. I will be using Premier Protein from costco. It is 30 grams of Protein and 2 shakes a day will do great People can be negative......very glad I had the surgery!

No. I was sleeved Oct. 26th (Friday). I was fuzzy the 1st day because of the pain meds. I threw up a little a few times as I was coming out of the anesthesia. By Sunday morning I felt as though nothing had happened! It was incredible. You do need to pay attention to what they tell you is OK to eat, and you need to eat slowly. "Signs" that you have had enough are subtle; you will find out what that is for you. That's it. I'm SO glad I did this.

Suggestions:

1) before you go into surgery, ask the doctor to write orders for pain medication to go directly into your IV (not big tablets)

2) tell the doctor you want the gas removed so you don't get the gas pains later.

I really don't know how. I received an e-mail copy of my doctor's report saying that he removed the gas. That's all I know. I think, if this is possible, everyone should demand that their doctor do this.

I wrote a similar post a week ago...and had a fair share of people telling me a couple 'horror stories'...I am due to go on Tuesday, and although I am frightened, the thought of being obese scares me more. I have tried to stay busy, and focus on the positives. I have noticed most people sharing here say they are feeling pretty good post op, It's very encouraging to read the posts! Good Luck

My surgery was Friday, October 10th. 2 days ago. Surgery was at 4:00pm. I came home yesterday at 3:00. Here's my schedule for last night until now at 10:00pm. Got home, drank Water, must sip!! Walked 10 minutes. Sat with the family. Took a pain pill at 9:30pm slept until 6 this morning. Got up at 6. Took Vitamin, drank water and broth (don't want to get dehydrated). It's uncomfortable, but possible. Went for a walk. Sat with family. Took a pill and napped. Woke up and went to the theater to see Dracula with a pillow to put over my stomach. Drank a glass of water during the movie. Afterwards, stopped at a restaurant, my mom had lunch and we listened to music. Not hungry at all. Came home at 2 and napped. Woke up, drank some more Protein Drink and water. sugar free Popsicles are the best. Went for a walk with the dog. Then went and rented two movies to watch with my mom. After this, will take a pill and go to bed for the night. Since last Monday, 7 days ago, I've lost 16 pounds. So thankful for this 2nd chance at getting my life together. No looking back.

I freaked out a few times before to and even right after surgery. With the OMG what did I just do... Some woman struggle with Hair loss. More than others. It just depends on you. It doesn't matter how much Protein you consume or how many Vitamins. If your body wants to do it, it's going to. I've heard so many people say their doctor said consume over 100g of protein daily. I was told if I could minimum at least. I barley get in 50-60. And that's because I refuse to drink Protein Shakes after 3 months of them. I am just sick of them! I refuse to make them a part of my everyday meal. I am almost 4 months post op, I eat 50-60g of protein a day, my hair has not fallen out any, if it will it should start now and last about 2-4 months. They say usually post op 3 month to 6 month then it calms down. But I have really thick hair. So even if it did it would have to come out in clumps for me to see a difference. All my labs were drawn and my levels are all great. Even my Iron of 15, and protein of 8.0... So just stay positive. It's great to hear stories but everyone is different. The constant stomach pain people talk about is from too much acid in their stomach. It doesn't feel like heartburn, it's just a constant pain and yucky feeling. I know because it happened to me. I up'd my dose of anti acid and wolla! Problem solved! Hope this helps doll. Good luck! Oh. And I am 28. Started at 208. Low BMI. I am now 165. 35 lbs to go!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
