Water and food at the same time?

Recommended Posts

I can't remember why we can't eat and drink at the same time. I am starting on more "regular foods" 6 weeks out and find that I really need something to help some things go down. I am thinking we are not supposed to because if fills the pouch so you aren't hungry? Does anyone know another reason?

It also washes the food through the pouch quicker and you feel hungry faster.

I cant tell which surgery you had BUT when i was banded in 2005 i was told not to because if you are too tight the drinking/eating will cause you to throw up...if you are not too tight it pushes the food out the pouch allowing you to eat more, which cause weight stall-gain!

Im now sleeved in 2014 and if i try to drink-eat i will throw up and have chest pains because there is no room for food/liquid! Hope this helps

I also think the nutrients in the food need 30 minutes to be absorbed by the body.

In addition to the above, there are potential issues for us who've had RNY where flushing the food too quickly into the intestines can cause issues. I can't recall the official term for it, but essentially the food isn't broken down enough for the intestines to handle it yet, so there can be issues that range from mild dumping to more severe stuff.

I've heard the same thing others have been saying. Occasionally I'll have very small swigs of Water just to help with the eating, but otherwise avoid drinking 20 mins before and after meal time.

This is the best video I've ever seen on why you don't want to drink with meals following gastric bypass - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR0VM3mnsgM .

I don't drink 30 minutes before I eat or 30 minutes afterwords. Just something I know that will help me overall and has worked well so far.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
