gastroparesis and gastric sleeve

I was just wondering if anyone else has gastroparesis? Mine is ideopathic (or unknown cause). I was told I may not be able to get any type of bypass or sleeve because of this, and I have to wait until my doctor consults further. Has anyone had the surgery with this condition? I am just looking for some hope....

I did a LOT more of it than the surgeon I had did.

I would definitely try to get the surgery and consult done at a Bariatric Center of Excellence.

I did and it was a mess. Its really the surgeon and the mindset and experience of them and their office staff that is going to help, more so than whether or not the doctor has done 200 or 600 surgeries.

I agree, we have to be our own advocate and do our diligence. I don't have this issue but I am experienced at medical research for unusual problems. My mom was told she would be in a wheelchair for life and could bleed to death due to the close proximity of her misaligned bone to a major vessel by SEVERAL board certified specialists. Being a scientist I knew something could theoretically be done and researched the subject and especially surgeons who specialize in difficult orthopedic procedures. I found an excellent, well-respected surgeon in NY and set up an exam. Mom walks just fine today and is no longer under the stress of bleeding out due to this problem. She was the 13th person in the US to have the surgery (lucky 13!).

Congratulations Ageekygal! It was when I started researching that things really made a difference for me and I could tell who knew and did what. I saw my surgeon for what he was.

You do have to be your own advocate. If you have a surgeon like mine, who isn't willing to be in with you for the long haul and be able to handle all sorts of stuff, really think about whether or not that mindset is going to help you.

I'm all about telling people find out beforehand. You don't want to get what I got.

The sleeve is supposed to fix gastroparesis, but it doesn't for everyone. Some, like me, are worse off. It might depend on the original cause of the gastroparesis. If it is the muscle of the stomach, I could see it being cured. If it is the enteric nervous system, that would account for why some people are "cured" of GP and some aren't. I have someone who didn't get diagnosed or have any problems until after the surgery.

Oh for a "hoot"? I went thru the records the first time I was diagnosed years ago. Another MD in the practice and the office manager said there is no record of me having GP. So I got the records and went thru them. Sure enough it mentions 'slow gastric emptying' in response to a timed test and some of the medications I was given, like metoclopramide, are what you give in gastroparesis. If you google slow gastric emptying, what comes up?

Well, I have found a doctor. He has been doing surgeries for more than 15 years to the sleeves. He will even take my insurance. I don't mind the wait seeing how my other health issues are involved. The doctor is even willing to do GERD repair surgery before than so I don't have to severe acid reflux anymore. All that being said, I should be able to have my sleeve done in January 2016 at the latest.

I had severe gastroparesis before my surgery and haven't had any problems after! My surgeon was terrific though and I know that it doesn't work for everyone, but for me I have had great results. Haven't ended back up in the ER with symptoms for over a year now!

That is AWESOME to hear that you had it fixed. There are many (by at least one study) who are helped with the surgery. Great to hear and I hope it keeps on working for you.
