10 28 2014 45 Posted October 11, 2014 Can someone remind me why we have to stop caffeine before surgery?
robga999 129 Posted October 11, 2014 you just read my mind!im actually 5 days post up and am having my first cup of decaf.im dying for a regular cup of coffee!!couple more weeks!i didn't stop my 3 cups a day of caffeine until the day before my surgery when I was on all clear.my dr wanted me to stop 2 weeks before but I just couldn't!too much to give up a once!!food, wine, coffee, cigerettes and coffee what!!!lol
KristenLee 60 Posted October 11, 2014 My surgeon said to stop caffeine bc I would go through withdrawal after surgery. I am not to have caffeine for at least 6 mos post op bc it can irritate the linking of the pouch. Good luck!!
McButterpants 2,846 Posted October 11, 2014 I agree with the above - the acids in the caffeine can be damaging to your new tummy. I was cleared for real coffee at my 6 week post-op visit. I'm glad I had to be caffeine free prior to surgery - I had serious withdrawals when I first stopped drinking it and had to ween myself off for a week. I'm 10 months post-op now and enjoy between 2 and 4 cups of coffee a day, back to normal!
10 28 2014 45 Posted October 11, 2014 Thanks guys! Guess I need to quit since I'm hoping to be scheduled for sometime in the next few weeks. Have a 2 year old though and don't get much sleep so that's going to be harder than the pre-op diet I've been on!!!
alwaysvegas 702 Posted October 12, 2014 Getting adequate liquid intake post-surgery can be difficult for some for a few weeks. Because caffeine is a diuretic, you increase the risk for dehydration, which can land you in the emergency room. I quit smoking and caffeine (in addition to other lifestyle changes) over several months before surgery and will never regret it. I'm able to take in over 100oz of liquids a day now, so I will sometimes have caffeinated coffee, but I usually order it Decaf. My entire craving levels for the 'bad stuff' has gone waaaaay down since surgery. I don't even miss soda. Honestly, instead of telling myself that I can't have a particular food or drink, I prefer to tell myself that I'm choosing not to have them. The power is in the choosing. Best of luck! nikkycoly 13 Posted October 12, 2014 My doc and nutritionist said a month and I can have coffee I'm a few days off and had some today! Mixed with some sugar free Creamer and it was amazing lol
Forsythia 882 Posted October 12, 2014 I put my Protein Powder in my morning coffee. I don't have any withdrawal from caffeine like a lot of people. I can literally quit any time. But I like having coffee because it makes going poo easy. Lol.

❤️lovemysleeve 32 Posted November 11, 2014 I haven't tried coffee again yet just Decaf. I am 7 weeks out so I think I will try it! I have missed Starbucks ! What I have had is sweet tea about once a week. really hard to give that up ! I used to drink it daily but since the sleeve I waited 6 weeks and had my first one ! I guess if I see it slows down my weight loss I will stop the sweet and try unsweetened ! I don't like the artificial sweeteners
nikkycoly 13 Posted November 11, 2014 Yeah that's the hard part. I was used to The artificial sweeteners so using sugar free sweeteners or "skinny" at Starbucks isn't a change for me. I do miss diet soda though! It's very hard for me. But I'm surviving!
10 28 2014 45 Posted November 11, 2014 So when I first brought this up I should I have said that I hate coffee!!! I'm a unsweetened iced tea addict ???? I'm two weeks post-op today & still no caffeine. Going back to the office tomorrow for the first time so we'll see if I can continue to go without...
