Going on a first date (dinner) 12 days post-surgery

Recommended Posts

So I was sleeved 12 days ago and am supposed to be having just high Protein liquids and cream Soups for the next 9 days. But I have a first date tonight and the guy made a dinner reservation at a very fancy restaurant. WITH NO Soup ON THE MENU! I don't know what to do. Just order a side of mashed potatoes (but even that's not allowed...however I have had them a couple times before thinking I was ok to eat them and didn't really have any issues)...order some entree and just push it around with my fork and pretend I'm eating but really just talk a ton so he doesn't notice? Ask them to make me a Soup? Do fancy restaurants normally do that sort of thing? I don't want to appear too picky, or tell him about my surgery.

Maybe they have a soup-of-the-day sort of thing that's not listed on their actual menu? I can't imagine a restaurant that doesn't have ANY kind of soup! Can you call them ahead of time to find out for sure? Does this guy know about your surgery? Probably not, assuming this is a first date. I would definitely NOT eat anything you aren't supposed to be eating yet. Even if that means having to come clean very early on in the meal about your surgery.

Call ahead, explain your predicament and ask the hostess what would be the best plan of action. Does your beau not know you've had surgery and are unable to eat? It would seem the easiest thing would be to change the reservation to a place that has Soup, at least. Barring that, hopefully they have a la carte side items so you can order something soft, like mashed potatoes.

He does not know about the surgery. I've only met him one time previously. But I also had a hiatal hernia repaired so that's what I've been telling most people I had surgery for, who have been asking about my eating habits, etc. I mean people who only have hiatal hernia repair also have to stick to soft foods and liquids for a while too. So I could just tell him that. But that still leaves me with nothing to eat on the menu, short of asking him to make a reservation somewhere else.

Well, if you call the restaurant and find out for sure that they don't serve any Soup of any kind, I would say call the guy, tell him you've looked over the menu, explain your surgery (even if it's just the hernia repair part), and ask if it would be okay to switch to a different restaurant. I know it will suck to have to do that, but if he's a good and decent guy, hopefully he'll take it okay and won't be upset.
