1st NUT appt. What can I expect?

Recommended Posts

Well, here it is...my first post. Somehow things got suddenly real.

I submitted all my forms last month and finally got the call from the bariatric center today. They would like me to book my first appointment with the nutritionist. Expect it to take a good hour, they said. So, I'm scheduled in a few weeks. What can I expect?

What was your first nutritionist visit like?

When I met with the one in my program it was a ten minute meeting if that I was shown a south beach diet book told to get a copy and follow it phase one two weeks phase two for two weeks and given two sample pages of what to eat and it was over I expected more not sure what but just more she was kind of snotty I was told to eat cottage cheese and veg for Breakfast I said oh that's gross she says in a snotty condescending tone well that's healthy eating! I left feeling disappointed felt kind of like cattle being moved down the line to the next thing I don't know why or what exactly I was expecting but that was my experience maybe ppl can share what their experience was like

My first NUT appt lasted about an hour. We discussed my eating habits, what kinds of things I've done in the past to lose weight and she came up with a sample meal plan for me to follow. She was big into label reading so she discussed this a lot. I also had to commit to making one dietary change before my next appt. In my case, I committed to switch from whole milk to 2% milk. She gave me some Protein powder and Calcium chews samples. If your NUT doesn't offer you any samples, ask if they have any to give you. My NUT had a whole basket full of samples on her desk and she always gave 2-3 to all her patients. I also had to start a food diary which I had to bring to each appt for her to look at and she'd offer suggestions on where I could make changes. She was very educated on the post surgery diet as well and was able to walk me through the post-op diet step by step as well as the Vitamin regimen I'll start in week 3.

They should be asking you about your eating patterns and help you make a plan on how to eat better. They should not be telling you eat X, Y and Z because they are healthy. They should be working with you on how to make what you are already eating healthier. They should be helping you set a goals to work on between appointments.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
