1 week post op protein intake issue

Recommended Posts

If I'm supposed to get in 60 grams of Protein a day and I'm on full Proteins and cream Soups with no texture how is anybody getting in the protein they need a day so far I've only been able to get a max of 40 grams of protein.

Does anybody have any suggestions, best practices, or ideas on other ways to get in protein other than drinking Protein Shakes

I think I was 2 or 3 weeks out before I got to my minimums. In the beginning, just do the best you can and get yourself to the minimum when you can.

A couple of suggestion to get more in - my doc's office suggested using a flavored Protein powder like powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury and adding an unflavored version as well. You can also add the unflavored Unjury to your Soups.< /p>

I don't think I was getting 60 grams a day as early as 1 week post op, but I was drinking Protein Shakes to meet my requirements once I was allowed them. It wasn't until I was able to do purees, scrambled eggs, and cottage cheese that I was able to get enough Protein from food to cut out one of my shakes. Now I am almost 6 weeks post-op and I still have to rely on two shakes a day to help me get my 85-100 grams in.

I'm still pre-op but I found this amazing drink called Cocotein. It's Protein coconut Water. 100 calories, 20 grams of Protein and only 5 carbs.

If you like the flavor of coconut, you might want to check it out. I believe it uses Isopure protein. Hopefully my tastes don't change for it because I think it'll be my lifesaver during the clear stage! Lol

I have found a few things, our nutrition store sells things like hot chocolate, Fruit Drinks that are Protein supplements. My favorite so far is "nectar" they have a lot of different favors. They are not as thick either, a lot smoother and easier to drink.

Syntrax Nectar..,23gm Protein and you can mix in Water or skim milk/1% they have many flavors and I would suggest to go to mybariatricpantry.com and order a sample pack for 19.99. The wild grape and kiwi strawberry are good. They have a double creme cookie that mixed with milk taste like Oreos dunked in milk. The Unjury. Unflavored protein is good too, I mix it with my broths and soups...not really a change in flavor. A scoop is 21gm protein. Good Luck!!

what I have been told, is to not not worry to much about hitting Protein goals in the first 4 weeks but rather work on getting comfortable with the portion sizes and drinking your fluids then when you are in the eating stages, things will progress and you will wean off the shakes and start getting your Protein from food sources. it does suck to feel super tired and weak, but that is to be expected...I am ending week 3 and starting week four tomorrow and I will now be eating soft foods, and I can tell you I am feeling VERY happy about investing in my Ninja blender and I have been drinking my veggies all week and I feel great! drinking the veggies gives me a chance to work on eating my protein and not being concerned that I am not getting proper nutrition!

I use Weight and Inches Protein Powder from Familybariatrics.com. It has 29g of Protein and 200 calories. I add two tablespoons of PB3 to it, which adds 55 calories and 5g of additional protein. I drink two each day to get in 68g of protein. I have one day left on the liquid diet and begin purée food. Has anyone else used Family Bariatric?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
