I knew that there will be hair loss post surgery, and that Protein was very important...but the other day i heard that someone lost their teeth post surgery! I never heard of that before and concerns me! Has anyone else heard you could lose your teeth??

I haven't heard anything about that, I am still pre-op...and I have dentures....but I hope no one has problems with that.

I have not heard of that! The hair loss is mostly due to the effects of anesthesia. Maybe that person had problems with nutritional deficiencies? I know scurvy (exteme Vitamin C deficiency) can cause tooth loss, but there is no reason for scurvy in this day and age in our society.

The only reason you would lose your teeth would be not taking your supplements. Make sure you take the required amount of Vitamins and minerals every day and you'll be fine.

I have never heard of anyone losing their teeth. I echo what everyone else here said... as long as you take your Vitamins, supplements and Protein - there is no reason that you should fear losing your teeth. My guess is if you heard someone lose their teeth post surgery - they had some other oral issue going on that really has no correlation to bariatric surgery.

I have heard of it with gastric bypass, but not with sleeve. With malabsorbative procedures (gastric bypass, or duodenal switch) it is possible to have serious issues absorbing vital nutrients and minerals. All bariatric patients should be on supplements for life, but it's even more critical with these malabsorbative procedures and even then there can be more issues with getting all the nutrients you need as compared to VSG or lap-band.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
