4 Months out and feeling great!

Recommended Posts

I decided to have gastric bypass after dieting and exercise failed. I had thyroid problems, PCOS, diabetes, and high cholesterol and had reached 217 lbs. I was around 110 lbs. when I graduated high school and slowly put on a few lbs. a year until I had my first baby and then the weight just kept piling on, I had gestational diabetes with both of my babies and had to take insulin with the second pregnancy and then I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2008. I had gastric bypass May 27, 2014 and was doing great until 3 weeks out. I developed severe pain in my abdomen and was in the ER for 11 hrs. and then sent home with elevated white blood cell count. I was back the next day and admitted with an infection and was septic, was a very sick lady and because the infection was so bad and close to my heart I had a heart attack. I was in hospital for 8 days and the only nutrition I had was from my IV for 5 days. I came home 6 lbs. heavier from IV fluids but quickly lost 10 lbs. in only 4 days because I was only able to do liquids for first week after being discharged. I said to hell with this surgery I just want to be well again, don't care abt weight loss any more. After a couple of weeks things started getting better, I was eating regular food again, losing weight, regaining strength and exercising, I had to start very slowly I was so weak after hospital stay! Now I am a little over four months out and have lost 50 lbs. since surgery date. My goal weight is 130 and I have 30 lbs. to go. My goal for now is to reach 150 by Christmas and I am only 6 lbs. away from that and am so excited. I have went from a size 22 to 16 and from a 3x top to an xl. The only things I don't like is the Hair loss and sagging skin but would rather live with that then the extra weight. Overall I am very glad I had the surgery done.

Did you have a leak 3 weeks out? I think it's terrible they sent you home after that first ER visit. Wow, you are doing fantastic.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
