New to site, 8 days post-op NZ

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm from Auckland, NZ. Am 8 days post- op and really struggling to get much of anything down including Water. Protein Shakes and Optifast make me feel sick.. The only Protein I'm getting atm is a couple of spoons of cottage cheese. Feeling pretty weak and very constipated:( have a few spoons of porridge with fruit in the morning, the cottage cheese at lunch time , a kiwi fruit with a bit of yoghurt in afternoon and a few spoons of purée potato and gravy for dinner.. I feel this isn't enough? Anyone else in the same boat at this stage? Any suggestions both for the Constipation, getting more fluids and protein in? Thanks

8 day's out seem to be really soon to be able to eat fruit and puree foods. Did your doc not have a diet progression plan for you? I'M 6 days post op and still on clear liquids. Day 8-14 I'm allowed full liquids. Day 15-30 is the pureed diet, this is the stage for cottage cheese and cooked cereals.then day 30-45 is my soft diet which is where the canned fruit and soft meats come in. Maybe your progressing too fast and not giving your new tummy time to adjust. Lateese92

I agree with Lateese92, 8 days sounds way too early to be eating those kinds of foods. My post surgery diet for week 1 is Clear Liquids only, week 2 is full liquids only, week 3 is pureed foods and week 4 is mushy foods. What are your doctor's instructions for diet? Have you tried unflavored Protein powder? You can add that to pureed Soups or broth and Jello. Also, how are you doing with getting Water in?

My doctor told me no fruits for three months. Too much sugar. Definitely don't eat potatoes with gravy. Try sf Jello but unfortunately u must drink a lot Water and Protein a lot right now.

I agree with everybody else. I am two weeks out tomorrow and I am on full liquids, next week pureed. I can't imagine fruit yet,i would think thats why your not feeling so good. Creamy Soups and put that unflavored Protein in it. That's what I do too. I also write down everyday what I am eating and how much protein I am getting in. Water is so important that will slow down bowels all together. Your pipes need water to flush out all that stuff. Get some help from your dietician if you don't have one, look for a support group too.

What schedule does your nutritionist/surgeon have you on? fruit 8 days out sounds completely insane! Also, you should be thinking "protein, Protein, protein", so things like fruit, porridge, potatoes are a total waste of space. If you are allowed soft/pureed foods, you should be focusing on stuff like soft cheeses and scrambled eggs. And as much as you probably hate Protein Shakes, you are still going to need to rely on them for a while to get all your protein in until you can move onto meats that will allow you to get more protein through food.< /p>

My surgeon and dietician say to start the purée diet 2 days after surgery. Everything I've eaten is on the purée diet list. They sayit's not necessary to be on a liquid diet following the sleeve surgery and that people move on to solid food quicker if they start on the purée.. Also that the reason many surgeons suggest liquids first as that was necessary for those having bands.. My surgeon has never performed gastric band surgery and has found this approach more effective

My surgeon and dietician say to start the purée diet 2 days after surgery. Everything I've eaten is on the purée diet list.. Will take your advice on board and try the Protein shakes again.. Also the schedule I'm following is what's recommended in Australia too..

Interesting that it's so different from most of the post-op diets I've see around here! I was specifically told to avoid fruit until at least 18 days post-op, when I'm allowed to start having some soft, peeled fruits. I'm now over 5 weeks post-op and still not allowed to have fresh fruit.

Yeah it's really interesting how different it is!! You would think since it's the same operation, a similar routine would be followed by all.. Rather confused now but will focus on getting in some more Protein and water!! Water seems so heavy to me.. Really struggle with it

My routine was liquid for the first 10 days and then we were allowed 5 soft foods. sugar free pudding, egg whites, Greek yogart, low fat cottage cheese and refried Beans. I did that for 14 days and now it is soft foods with some limits. I do this for another 14 days and then I start solids slowley. I am requir ed to attend educational classes. I am very interested in all of the different plans on this site. Good luck to all and if you even think there is a problem call your doctor right away so you are safe on your wonderful weight loss journey

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
