Weight gain 1 month post op?

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve about 5 weeks ago and weighed today - scale says I gained three pounds?!? But I haven't eaten anything I'm not supposed to eat! I started exercising 3 days ago, could that show up as weight gain?

I gained 3 pounds at 6 weeks out for no particular reason. And then stayed there for a month. It was my first (but not last) stall. I was actually very nauseous from an antibiotic I was taking most of that time and was not eating and drinking as much as I should have. At around 10 weeks I started feeling better, pretty much doubled my calorie and Water intake and lost 8 pounds in 1 week!

And yes, excersise can cause you to retain Fluid which will definitely affect your daily weight. I had to get IV fluids for dehydration 3 times during that month I was stalled because of serious diarrhea. During the worst episode I gained 11 pounds in 24 hours from replenishing fluids. Best 11 pounds I ever gained....being dehydrated sucks.

I'm not up three pounds, but I have gained the past two days in a row. I'm also 5 weeks out, but I've been exercising for a couple of weeks now. I have no idea what is going on. It's very frustrating!

Very frustrating! It does make me feel a little better to know I'm not the only one though - thanks!

You are probably gaining because of Muscle. When you exercise you build muscle and it breaks down the fat. So, you should take notice in your inches more than anything. Hopes this helps

I am 6 weeks post op.i didnt gain weight but i didnt lose for almost 2 weeks. it really had me upset. you hear of so many people whose weight melted off i couldnt understand why it wasnt the same for me. but finally yesterday the scale moved and today another pound down! i try not to weigh myself everyday it puts too much pressure. As long as we stick to what we are supposed to do i truly believe that we will be a success!! good luck!

That may be the case in the original poster's case, but it is definitely not the case in my situation. I was exercising MUCH more intensely pre-op than I am allowed to now. I am restricted to just "brisk walking" until 2 months out, whereas before the surgery I was doing some running and high resistance on my exercise bike. If anything, I'd expect to be losing muscle with such limited activity right now.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
