Question about protein powders

Recommended Posts

Hello I am having surgery next Tuesday 10/14. Right now I am drinking Special K Protein Shakes and Boost glucose control, both of which were recommended by my surgeon. I am wondering if I need to buy a special Protein Powder for after surgery to try to get all my necessary Protein in, that would be a lot of these shakes and I am hearing people having a hard time with getting in all the liquids. Would you recommend an unflavored powder to add to pretty much anything? Any advice would be great. Thank you all.

powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury unflavored Protein powder is great. I add it to my Vitamin crystals, Soups and you can even add it to plain milk. I also like the pure Protein ready made drinks (30g of protein in 11oz). The first couple of days post op the Isopure clear helped too. Each person is different so I tried to make sure i hd options when I came home.

Hope that helps and good luck!

I haven't had my surgery yet...its coming on 03 December. My NUT suggested unflavored Protein powder because it is so hard to get the Protein in. I kinda like the idea of being able to put it in stuff like crystal light as well...so I don't have to do the shakes all the time....just my two cents...

Don't buy too much of anything. I bought several different types and didn't like any of them, including unjury and Isopure unflavored. You'll have plenty of time after surgery to order what you end up liking. Good luck.

I was given prosource with my crystal light in the hospital. I have since bought it on Amazon and drink that-it's a double win bc I get 16 oz of Water and 1 oz of the unflavored prosource has 16g of Protein. I had my surgery on 9/30 so I'm finally transitioning into the full liquid stage. I have added the strawberry protein powder to light plain yogurt. A full 8 oz has TONS of protein. Finally I mixed a couple scoops of my Cookies n cream muscle milk light powder into a SF Jello cheesecake pudding mix. With milk, this too has lots of protein per 4oz serving. I can't imagine stomaching that many Protein Shakes so I'm all about looking for different ways to get that powder in. Hope that helps.

So is Prosource better than unjury?

It's different in that Prosource comes in a liquid form already, so it doesn't alter the thickness of my Water like the powder did. There's no grittiness either. So it's easier, to me anyway, to actually drink it. While it slightly sweetens the mix, it is unflavored but not flavorless. Mixing unflavored liquid Prosource straight into Water alone probably wouldn't be tasty.

The mix I use in my yogurt is a actually the strawberry Sorbet powder of Unjury.

Hope that helps.

I surgery isn't until the day before Thanksgiving but I am still drinking a shake once a day, getting in the groove of things...by the time my pre-op diet comes I will probably be sick of them..lol

I use Biochem 100% vanilla whey Protein - has about 20 grams of Protein per serving. My NUT told me to mix with Almond Milk, 1/2 a piece of strawberry and a couple slices of banana...and it's delish!! It's about $32.00 for a 1.8 lb. can..but for now it's good and it was given to me free...so I'm not complaining.

I'm anxiously awaiting my surgery on November 4th. I took precautions and got my flu shot Oct 1st hoping to avoid the flu (which would postpone things). So far so good.

In reference to the Protein powders, I just bought some bottles of the Unjury powders. I was a little worried on their website when it said the manufacturing includes products like Shellfish and other things, so I had to ask. So far I've had no reaction, so it must be a standard label to cover allergies. I'm allergic to Shrimp and Crab, so it was a worry. As long as I don't have a reaction, I'll use this brand.

I ordered the chocolate splendor, the chicken Soup, and the unflavored powder cannisters (17 servings each, with each serving having 21g Protein). I also ordered 10 individual packets of the vanilla as a test since I love vanilla Creamer in my coffee in the morning. After cooling down my coffee under the 140 degree temperature recommendation, I put a packet in my coffee. It was almost as good as the French Vanilla creamer "CoffeeMate" puts out, but the coffee does not take on the appearance of having cream in it.

I'm testing different protein powders/shakes on the list my doctor provided, so I can get the most bang for my bucks and not have to suffer from drinking chalk-like drinks. Don't know which ones are chalky, because so far I've been lucky on that end.

I start my pre-op diet on Oct 24th, so I'm pretty sure I'll be ready with all the supplies I've picked up.

Clenzen and any others: Just want everyone to know that on the Unjury website, there is a sample pack of each of the flavors of the Protein powders you can get to try it out, and it even comes with a small shaker/mixer. You can try out the different kinds of powders before you order any of the big containers (17 servings in a regular container). I found that a neat concept, so you're not having to go thru the process of returning it. According to UNJURY's website, they accept return of products if you are dissatisfied.

When I got my box, they also included some suggestions on how to use the unflavored protein powder in other drinks and foods. Some of the protein powders say to keep temperatures under 140 degrees F, and to think of it in terms of an egg white when it's cooked. Too hot and the protein clabbers up.

Just so you know, I'm not affiliated with UNJURY other than just being a customer.

I ordered a starter pack of Unjury.

It includes 2 packs of each of the following flavors: unflavored, strawberry, vanilla, chocolate and chicken broth. This is a great way to test them all out without buying large quantities only to find out you might not like them. The starter pack comes with a food thermometer too, for the reason stated above about not going over 140 degrees. So far this brand is only one I've seen that does that. For me it was totally worth it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
