Post op gas and pain

Recommended Posts

I am 5 days out from my surgery and I am still having a lot of pain and gas. Is this normal and if so when will it subside? I am also having a lot of issues consuming the amount of Fluid that I'm supposed to in my total day. Please help!

I am also 5 days out. The pain seems to be lessening with each day. Walking was a huge help. Getting the prescribed amount of fluids and Protein has also been a challenge. Are you all on a liquid diet? If so, how much Soup are you eating. I can finish about 2 or 3 ounces and I am content. Is that enough?

I am on the liquid diet and have been able to consume about the same 2-3 oz. I can really feel when my stomach is full. It's just been really hard consuming the other daily requirements. Are you drinking any Protein shakes? I'm not but have a post op visit tomorrow and will find out how I'm doing.

No hot flashes. I am very cold now since surgery which is odd for me since I was always hot.

Lots of gas. I am getting my fluids via Popsicles, Jello and started cream based Soups and cream of wheat thinned out today. Just thought it would have been a little easier getting the fluids. I know that I am not getting the 50-60 oz that I'm supposed to be. What are you doing that is working?

Hi LisaCO. YES, now that you mention it. I am hot and cold throughout the day - no fever. This is odd for me as I am a person that is never cold.

Ok I was starting to get worried. I just checked my temp its 97.0. I think my body is in shock. I have been taking short walks. I think I am going to try some drained Soup maybe I need some thing more then Protein & Water.< /p>

Hi all, check your sugar free items I had trouble at the beginning with sugar alcohol. Also had trouble with splenda items. I am doing much better now 6 weeks out. But I too ate Popsicle and fudge pops. When I would do one after another I figured out it was too much "fake" sugar at once. Also my doctor suggested the lactose pills before my Protein. Again my body has changed enough 6 weeks out that I don't need them. i had to keep changing my Protein powder until i found one that wasn't so hard on my system. Good luck it is a trial time period. I promise it does get easier.

After talking to my NUT this morning My local Protein Shake mix I drank before surgery suger content was to much for my body. I felt horrible yesterday the hot flash/chills was my body reacting. Today I drank Isopure dutch chocolate (very good). I feel much better. :) Back on my journey & feeling hopeful.

I had this same issue with my medial gastric bypass. I had horrible stomach gas because they blew up my belly with air to check for leaks. Not sure if they do that with other surgeries too. Took me several weeks to pass any gas. Walking helped when I was able to to do that. Good luck! It will get better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
