Post surgery questions!

Recommended Posts

I am one week post op. Feeling ok. I am on a liquid diet for the first 2 weeks. Some days a struggle to get in all 64 ounces. Few questions: anyone get chest pains when they burp or hiccup? I can take one sip of Water then hiccup and get a tightness in my chest? Is that normal? Also is anyone terrified to start "eating" again?! How do you deal with that? One last thing, I am zapped from energy. Good thing I am off work for 2 weeks! I get a 30 min walk in daily and some house stuff, grocery shopping and I am done! Feel like I have no energy! Does that get better as my body adjusts?! Thank you everyone! I appreciate your insight!!

Each day you will feel a little better until you are back to feeling normal.

It is challenging to learn to eat & drink often enough to keep your energy up. I especially have trouble in the mornings. I have more energy later in the day when I have had time to eat and drink more.

Hang in there.

Yes! That is completely normal. I had the exact same thing after every sip for the first week and a half or so. Tiny sip, then a gurgling, then a constriction, then a burp. It went away about a week and a half post-op and I only ever have anything like that now if I drink/eat too fast or too much.

As for the lack of energy, that got better once I was able to move on to pureed/mushie foods like scrambled eggs and cottage cheese. Once I was able to do that, my calorie intake went way up and I had much more energy.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
