Taste buds changing possibly

Recommended Posts

I notice today the Protein Shake I use to drink pre surgery doesn't taste the same at all. I'm just 8 days out. Is that normal for your taste to change so fast? When did you notice yours changing?

Yep, after surgery I could no longer stand the disgustingly sweet and thick shake. I now drink unflavored Protein Powder in skim milk and I love it. I almost wish I could just do that for my meals as I seem to have little interest in exploring food.< /p>

My tastes changed big time. I went for months where food didn't taste good at all, it was a chore to eat. TAKE ADVANTAGE! That is the golden opportunity to start changing your relationship with food.< /p>

Now, nearly 3 years out, my tastes are pretty much back to normal although I dont have nearly the sweet tooth and plan Water still tastes a little funky (which it never did preop).

@ "CowgirlJane" wow 3 years seems so far out. That's awesome! How is life at that stage? How has your weight been throughout time? Any advice for a newbie?

I'm 3 weeks post-op, and nothing tastes good to me. I'm having real trouble getting in 3 small meals and 2 Protein Shakes, plus all the Water. The Protein shakes disgust me, too. I just can't seem to fit all the food in. I'm so weak and tired! I'm supposed to go back to work tomorrow and I'm really questioning if I'm ready or not, and I only work part time. I even called the nutritionist today, who basically told me to just keep trying. Surgery date was Sept. 15th; I came home the evening of the 16th, but since I live alone and was in such pain I couldn't take care of myself. I became dehydrated and ended up back in the hospital for 5 days.

@ "DiannVolvo" sorry to hear that. Don't get discourage give it time. Honestly I've been ok. Just little things here and there but I've been mobile pretty well on my own. I've been going to the gym walking slow of course but I'm able to do it for and hour and a half. I figured out I drink more doing that. I still can't get in my Protein. Some moments I get the urge to eat and then it's times I could care less. It's a roller coaster with this. I'm starting to sleep in my bed with a ton of pillows tho. Just take it one day at a time. Each day I learn something new. I made the mistake of eating yogurt/pudding and my sleeve ached at me for a couple days but now since I haven't eaten it, it's fine. I still barely get 64 oz of fluids in but it increases everyday.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
