Barretts disease

Recommended Posts

So today was my endoscopy. I had my band drained on Friday past. After they did the endoscopy the doctor came in to talk to me about his findings. He said "your esophagus is really beat up." He showed me pictures of it and told me what it's supposed to look like. He said that it also seems that I have an infection there as well. He gave me meds and also a prescription antiacid. He said that my band has not eroded into my stomach. I honestly am surprised because although I have suffered with acid reflux and it could get annoyng it really wasn't constant.

He said that there is a possibility that I might have Barretts disease which can be very serious. He said that is what a person usually has that can lead to esophageal cancer but that the percentage is low plus that I may not even have Barretts.

He told me to go on liquids for about a week and to take my meds and to make another appointment with a gastroenterologist in a month.

If I do have Barretts chances are I won't be able to have the sleeve. He said that if it is a mild case I may still be able to have it. I'm hoping so much that I don't have this.

p.s. I named this thread thinking that maybe someone with a similar issue would respond.

I hope you don't but if you do, you are lucky to catch it early! I could be from WLS and reflux. I will pray for good news for you!

i had moderate Barrett's was diagnosed in 2004. it was the ONLY positive barrett's biopsy i ever had, every year after that was negative once i was on the right meds and the reflux was stopped... had a sleeve done in June of this year. reflux is all but gone.

Did you originally have the lapband?

Good luck, I had reflux with my band, not diagnosed with barrette's but bad enough that I was nervous about having the sleeve and it getting worse. I just had my sleeve last week so it is too soon to really know if it will get better or not. From what I was told if my reflux problem was too bad the sleeve was not the best option but rather the bypass. Have you discussed this with your doctor, did he give you any options?

Hi, thank you for the response. He hasn't yet discussed anything with me because I was at the very beginning of my journey. I would not get the bypass; I'm too afraid with the malabsorption and the rerouting of intestines. I still have not been diagnosed with Barrett's but am due for the next endoscopy in November. Everything is kind of on hold until then.

I wish you all the best with the sleeve; I've heard many positive things about it.

I had another appointment today with the bariatric doc and he disagreed with that decision of no surgery with Barretts Esophagus. We discussed it at length and he advised me that he feels I can still have it after looking over a few of my personal stats. The main one being that before being banned I had not had one single episode of acid reflux/heart burn. It's not 100% definate that he will do the sleeve, but he feels it is very likely and my date stays set at December 9, 2014. He'll let me know once I get my result from the biopsy of my esophagus. Needless to say, I am overjoyed!!

I got some more potential good news today I went to my gastro doc and she said the films (to her) look more like just inflamation but she can't say for sure until she does the endoscopy on Nov 14. Since I had a total unfill and have been taking the omeprazol I'm hoping even the inflamation has cleared up. I am cautiously optimistic.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
