So, what's the story behind "no sugar"?

Recommended Posts

I'm sort of new here and I'm 2 weeks and a few days away from my surgery.

I am reading as much as I can and a recurring item surrounds sugar and the need to avoid it as much as possible.

Does anyone have a handle on the reasoning behind that and why we should steer clear?

I'm fortunate in that I don't have much of a sweet tooth but I'm inquisitive about the rule.

Dumping syndrome, a condition that causes mild to severe diarrhea, nausea, bloating and abdominal cramping, occurs in at east 15 to 20 percent of gastric bypass patients after eating sugary or fatty food.

I didn't believe that it would happen to me. So, I tempted fate. Two words for the wise. AVOID SUGAR. Not only for the dumping syndrome, but it will help tremendously in getting the weight off and keeping it off.

Good luck!

Dumping syndrome is a problem for many people who have had gastric bypass surgery.
I hope this helps.

I think that applies to other types of surgery. According to my surgeon a lot of foods that cause problems with bypass surgery do not bother sleevers after their stomach heals.

Sugar has not bothered me at all. I just do not want to reestablish a craving for carbs so I avoid sweets, for the most part.

Some it bothers and some it doesn't. Some medications can do this to you as well. I have taken adderrall xr for several years now. But, since I've had the surgery, if I take it and then eat or drink even a shake, the dumping syndrome happens. OMG, talk about misery!!! So, I only took it for a few days post op. I haven't taken it since. Each week, it seems to get better and don't have it happen as severely or as often. I think it just needs to get out of my system completely.

People with the sleeve can also have this happen. It isn't completely exclusive. ;)

In my opinion, sugar (refined) causes cravings. I don't have dumping syndrome but I am as sugar free as possible, because it causes cravings for me. On a side note I DID have a few sweet drinks for the first time for my six month anniversary. My stomach hasn't been right since. No more.

Sugar has no nutritional value. It's just empty calories. A lot of people find that carbs like sugar slow down their weight loss. I have no issues with sugar. Some people do, but I can eat it just fine now.

Dumping syndrome is no joke. I am a sleever and it happened to me at least three times. I tried diluted juice and I was a hot mess all day. Throwing up and on the toilet at the same time. Obviously it was not diluted enough but Iwill not do that again. Lol

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
