Problems with rice?

Recommended Posts

I am just starting to feel like cooking again - 7 weeks out from RNY. I have a few friends who've had the surgery who say they cannot handle rice, even years post-surg. Anyone have this problem? I love rice and I've been wanting to make a stir-fry. I know I shouldn't eat a lot of rice, but a little in there would be nice.

I am 17 months post-op. I have had rice a few times since surgery without any problem.

I mean this in an encouraging way, but if you say you know you shouldn't have rice, why would you start eating it? I'm originally from Louisiana and we put everything over rice but now that I've had surgery and changed my eating patterns, I find even gumbo or stir fry still taste great without rice. It just adds carbs and nutritionally empty calories.

A couple of RNY friends are 2 years out and rice still is awful for them. I plan on avoiding it like the plague.

Have you tried "cauliflower" rice? Google it if you haven't. Assuming RNY can tolerate cauliflower (gas?) this might be a good option. I make it now and love it.

bread and rice are a big no no. It sits so heavy on your stomach. At 7 weeks I was just starting soft foods. You need to baby your new pouch and give it time to heal. Enjoy your pouch now and eat right. Now you are not as hungry as you will be 10 months down the road and if you start eating that type of food now, I fear for you at 10 months. Know someone who lost 70 lbs, started eating like pre surgery and gained 11 lbs. She has a long, hard road ahead of her. Change your mind set now while you are in the early stages, follow Drs orders, eat Protein, take Vitamins, and drink fluids.

I do not eat rice or Pasta. I try to stick with Protein based food sources. If you want to try rice, go for it. Just try a little bit at a time. It is strictly up to you.

I have tried rice. I can eat Spanish rice no problem but fried rice makes me very sick. I only eat a couple bits of any rice though.

Rice, bread, pasta...Big no-no for me. It makes me sick. Every time I've tried it I throw it up. So I avoid it. I can eat the low carb tortillas with no problem. Those used to be my favorites too. Everyone is different.

I found tons of recipes on Pinterest. I'm only a week post-op, but I'm saving all kinds of recipes for future use. I'm learning there are so many substitutions and healthier options to make a dish low carb, low sugar, and great!

I don't do rice. Doesn't work with most pouches

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
