How many oz could yall eat 2 1/2wks post op?

Recommended Posts

My husband had gastic bypass 9/19/14 He has done great....no pain, hardly ever gets nausea...etc. His surgeon said his pouch would only be able to hold 2 oz of food but he can eat 6 oz of mashed potatoes or veg refried Beans....is this normal? Just afraid of stretching out the pouch.

I would check in with surgeon. I was on 3 weeks of liquids, 3 wks puréed food, and then 3 wks of soft food. I really didn't have much of an appetite at first. Stretching your pouch is a fear I still have, but if I over eat, I get so sick.

Thank you. I'm gonna call the surgeon office tomorrow and ask. He had his 2wk post op apt last week and they told him it was ok to go to the next phase and to try mashed potatoes etc...

You will see that all Drs are a little different. Think they base everything on the individual patient. Rely on your Drs instructions and ask questions and call office. It is all part of post op care.

At 7 WLS postoperative I got sick a couple times after a few ozs, usually start throwing up. Ate too fast. So I'm careful.

I believe it's possible to eat double what my surgeon said I can handle. But why should I? I feel full after a few ozs.

Mind over stomach!

At first I couldn't tell when I was full do to the nerve being cut. I stayed to my plan which was 2oz. Just because he can really doesn't mean he should. I am still new at 7 months but I am still weighing, measuring, and recording everything I eat. I don't plan on that changing either. It is also easier to overeat on soft foods such as refried Beans.

Just because he can eat it doesn't mean he should. Is he really hungry? I had surgery a few days before him and I can tell you I have no interest in eating. I eat because I have to. I portion out 2oz of food on a small plate and eat that for my meals.

I would definitely check with his surgeon. Your husband needs to remember that his suture lines are still healing and it's not really a good idea to put pressure on them by eating too much.

Thank you everyone!! i think the confusion was he didnt fell full and the dr told him to eat until he felt full. I also think he was expecting the sick feeling or pressure to know when he is suppose to stop eating. He is very good at keeping track of everything he eats or drinks. I didn't know about the nerve being cut so that makes since why he didnt feel full. Since then I have cut his portions down to 2 oz portions. I also told him to make sure he eats something small every 3-4 hours because he wouldn't eat anything all day. Again, thank you.

I had the gastric bypass so my surgeon had me on soft foods about the time your hubby is at. Mine told me 4-6oz meals but right now 4 months out I have to remind myself to eat because I don't get that hungry feeling I got pre-op. Frustrating but I am working through it.

Good luck to you both as it is definately a change for a couple when one or both have wls. He is a very lucky man to have you. I know I am too with my hubby.

I think he had a delayed reaction or something cuz now he can only take a couple bites and he is full. In the beginning he didnt get that full feeling like the Dr said he would. He is 5wks post op and has lost 49 pounds. Hope everyone is doing well:)

I will be a year next month. If I over eat, I start to burp. I still don't eat that much at one sitting, but get hungry a few hours later. The worst feeling in the world is over eating and needing to throw up. Sometimes you can throw up and feel better and sometimes it lasts for hours. If I get too hungry, I eat too fast and that is usually when I tend to get sick. Soon you should be able to tell when you are full, by keeping track of your food, portion size, or in my case, burping. I still rely on Protein Shakes as a meal supplement.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
