I am having a lot of trouble getting my refferal to where it belongs and I just really need to vent...

My Gen. Surgeon here sent in the refferal for me to go to Walter Reed a month ago. I have yet to hear anything about it so I call up to the Gen surgery clinic there and they say I am not in the system so they cant tell if it was sent or not.. So I call back to the refferal office here and they tell me that it wasnt in the right place so they are resubmitting it. I wait a few more days and I call back up to Walter Reed and guess what... they still havent recieved it, she reccomends I speak to someone in outpatient records, who says if I dont come up there to their office with my ID in hand she cant put me in the system, to which I reply well Im in florida its not like I can hop in my car and slide on over!

So I speak to the refferal office here again and they reccomend I speak to someone in refferal management there, which I do and, not surprising, he hasnt seen it yet either. So I call back to refferal management here and ask them to please RE-send the refferal attention to this man, on his direct fax line, and he is going to call me when it gets there, if I dont hear from him in an hour-ish I am going up to the hospital to pick up the refferal and sending it to him myself cause why the hell should I have to do so much leg work if this is specifically what these two offices are for???

I cant even tell you how much stupid time has been wasted with everyone playing pass the buck with this damn refferal. Why dont these people realize that yeah we are military dependants but we have feelings and needs too! JERKS! I am so steaming mad right now I am seeing sparks. I am so sick to death of getting the run around from the military hospital system and there be no damn recourse for us. There isnt a damn soul I can complain to that will give a flying green bean about this... :angry I better stop before I burst something important....

Someone please tell me that they have had this much run around in the civilan world too. At least I wont feel like its the norm only in the military world.

/cry

/end rant

OH, I know ALL about the runaround you get from the military hospitals... been there a few times with my fiance... my all time favorite was when they misdiagnosed him with ...first, appendicitis (he had his appendix removed at age 14) then strep throat, then a sinus infection.

... no symptoms of any of these.... and no cultures were done...

AND

...like we told them... I was just diagnosed with Mono. earlier that week ...it was in one ear and out the other... wouldn't even check him for it...even though our symptoms were exactly the same.

...not to mention the 4 hours we waited there...he was the only patient there!!!!

...gotta love it.

...on the other hand..there is alot of the same B/S in civilian healthcare/insurance also...

It is no different in non military. Ask Lauren, she's been fighting this for months.
Oh, yeah. This has been an incredible ordeal. I feel like I take one step forward and two steps back. It seems like no one knows what they're doing. Faxes weren't being sent to the correct number for my insurance company; surgeon's offices weren't getting the right crap from my other doctors; when they DID get the right crap, it got lost; the 1st surgeon's office (I had to switch surgeons) never found out that they weren't covered by my insurance until AFTER everything had been submitted to them; had to have MORE medical tests done before I could be approved; my current surgeon went on maternity leave this summer; I'm having to change insurance policies in August (which means Ill have to have everything resubmitted to insurance if they schedule my date after then), etc., etc., etc. You name it, it's probably delayed my surgery. Believe me, it's not just the military that doesn't know what they're doing.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
