Gastric bypass for me

Recommended Posts

I met with my surgeon for the first time on October 2nd. Since I have acid reflux really bad, my only option for weight loss surgery is the gastric bypass. I was prepared for this choice because I have done a lot of research on wls. I have 3 month worth of diet and Dr visits, and about 6 weeks after that should be my surgery. Is there any advice or information that anyone thinks I should know?

Where to begin my friend? Just kidding, but indeed there is a lot to learn but you will get there. Read as much as you can, research, then research some more!

Thanks Beni. I do a lot of research and I am constantly on here. I have been researching it since February. I started the process in July. I have close friends who have had the surgery and they run the support group in the city that they live in.

Hi!

My name is Laurie

I started my journey back in August. I am now waiting on the last Dr. To send his report in so we can turn it into the ins. Company. Little aggravated because my appointment was September 16 and as of yesterday he still has not sent the report in. I was hoping to have my surgery mid October. I will call again on Monday to see if he can get the report out.

Have a great night all :)

Yes, call him. I had the same situation. I even told his secretary, what is going to take to get this report faxed? Do I need to go sit in the office all day?It was faxed in less then an hour. Someone had forgotten to do it.

Try and get your daily walking exercise in prior to surgery, it will help with the recovery process.

If you haven't cut out caffeine and carbonated beverages from your diet, do so now. I had been on a 6 diet coke per day habit for many years. When I went off it cold turkey about 6 months before the operation, I suffered from severe withdrawal symptoms - severe headaches and muscle pain. It took a week to get over it. This is common for many people. So it is better to get this over with long before surgery than on the day of surgery. No use compounding the recovery process. Also by the way, I lost 20 pounds pre-surgery on this change alone.

Lkk0158 I hope you are able to get your report sent in soon so that you can have your surgery.

James thank you for the advice. Today is the day that I start dieting and exercising like I am supposed to. I know it will be hard for me at first but I figure the sooner I start the easier it will be when I get close to surgery.

For James and others trying to kick caffeine soda .... I was on it for 30 years, like many. Had been trying for years to get off soda and then started down this road. I made it a two month process. First I cut my sodas to only 3 cans per day, then two cans for a couple weeks then I just added Water to make them less tasty but still retain enough caffeine to not have a Migraine. I just kept adding water until they were pretty light, then tried to go every other day then two days off and one dsy on. You know the drill. I actually got off two weeks earlier than planned. And have been off for 6 weeks now except one day when I had a severe migraine that the mess did not help with. Oh, one more thing, I drank tea (black ) and knew I could stop that.

I did have a few days after I was completely off soda, but it was handled with tea and patience. Since I couldn't have my ibuprofen either. Good luck out there!

I have some amazing news. On December 8th I go for my last supervised diet appointment with my doctor and then on December 18th I have my psych evaluation. That is all I am waiting on to get my approval process started. I hope to have approval by January.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
