Swallowing golf balls? Ohhhh noooooooo!

Recommended Posts

2 days post op and wondering if I am having the infamous "gas pains" or if it is something I should not be overly worried about. Every time I swallow a liquid, be it water/pain meds/ or broth it literally feels like I am swallowing a golf ball and its very painful. Is that normal?? Anyone with his experience PLEASE let me know!!

I am no where near where I should be for Protein or fluids and I am only taking tiny sips so I don't believe I am drinking too much at one time but it would be wonderful if I could get some pointers. Thanks!

you may be swallowing too much at once. One or two small swallows was enough for me, about every 15ish minutes. I am 8 days post op and still not getting all liquids or Proteins. Take it slow.

For the first week or more post op, every single time I took a sip of liquid, I went through this whole thing where there was like this gurgling thing in my chest, then a constriction of my esophagus that was quite painful. It gradually went away over time to where it was only doing that when I was drinking too much/too fast, then only when I ate too much/too fast and now that I'm a month out, I never have it at all. I think it was due to the swelling.

Are you truly sipping - I had to take really small sips. Think about the Nyquil measuring cup on top of the bottle - my sip was about 1/2 that right after surgery. Very small sips. I set my phone to chime every 5 minutes and that reminded me to take a sip.

It was still hard for me to swallow on day 2. Hang in there, it gets better every single day. On day 2 it took me all day to finish one 11 oz Protein Shake and I got in prob about 20 total ounces of liquid. Even taking the 2 oz little cup of pain meds took me like 10 mins to drink. I promise you'll notice every day you can swallow easier and more.

My doctor told me to just concentrate on getting in fluids during the first week or so after surgery, and work up to getting in all your fluids and Proteins. By my 2 week post op visit I was just starting to get in all my fluids and Protein. One of my favorite ways of getting in protein was to mix 16 oz of cold Water with a packet of classic orange crystal light, and a scoop of vanilla flavored Unjury protein mix. It tastes like a dreamsicle, you can also mix it with milk, but I don't always like the texture of the milk.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
