Hunger...the BEAST is back!

Recommended Posts

I'm now 7 months post-op and just as my doctor warned me, the hunger is returning. I've been in a stall for a few weeks, which is fine because I had some weeks when the weight was just falling off. The problem now is that I'm feeling real hunger more frequently. I'm continuing to make healthy choices and being more diligent about tracking what I eat. Any other suggestions on how to control the hunger beast would be appreciated!

Bring no bad for you food into your home! Fortunately the hunger should be easily satisfied. Make sure the "hunger" is not actually thirst...drink plenty of Water. Im working out so much now that I can tell my body want more calories. I just know as long as I can tell that then my body is burning fat. I'm losing a pound a day and I'm just over 3 months out and over 100 lbs lighter! :)

I'm still early out, but I do get hungry sometimes. I do think that keeping carbs low, especially sweets, helps curb my hunger.

I would say that right around 7 months was when I started feeling a little more hungry and found that I was able to eat a little more and could tolerate just about anything (much to my dismay...lol)

I agree with what the others have said. First drink Water. Probably 1/2 the time when I think I'm hungry I'm really thirsty. Then check your head. Probably another 1/4 of the time I am really not PHYSICALLY hungry, it's more a head hunger. Finally, if you need a snack make sure it's Protein. I DEFINITELY feel way hungrier when I eat high-carb Snacks or foods like pretzels or crackers or something. Even the next day..... carbs breed cravings for more carbs.

My suggestion... keep the carbies low. I do not go over 40g per day if I can help it. When I eat more than that I am a lot more hungry, moody, and I have mad cravings. It is so much easier for me to stay on plan when I am low carbing. Low carbing was my diet of choice prior to surgery anyway, and it fits with my lifestyle very well, so YMMV (your mileage may vary), but for me it keeps me from getting too hungry. I am 8 months out, BTW and I am finding I am able to eat more than I used to, so sticking with dense Proteins helps fill me up well.

Hello! First post here, had my sleeve surgery one week ago today and I am weak and HUNGRY! Everyone seems so upbeat on this website and I am just starving and dragging myself through my days. My surgeon was not worried about a clear liquid diet, just "slip and slide" the first week, so today I'm trying some puréed Campbell's Soup. I have not once felt full yet, just HUNGRY! Any advice?

If you are a week out, I'm guessing that you're on the liquid phase? How many calories are you taking in? It could be not enough... do you drink shakes? It could also be acid in your stomach... do you take a PPI?

Hey guys, thanks for your feedback. I think I'm over the hunger hump. I'm feeling back to "normal" now. I think it was head hunger. I'm back on track now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
