Hi all,

So I'm a few hours off of a day before my surgery and am sick to death of this pre op diet! But tomorrow I go on a 24 hour liquid diet and if I'm honest I'm looking forward to it just to introduce some flavour at least to my meals.

So just like you all I'm getting nervous and if I ask myself what am I nervous about really it's having excess skin. I've been told that I'm young and active so if I do the right exercise I should get some good results but there is a nagging feeling in the back of my head. Has anybody had good results with excess skin or got some good good tips?

Thanks

I don't mean to be blunt, but shouldn't excess skin be at the end of your worry list? I'm worried about deep vein thrombosis, gallstones, leaks, pain, bad reaction to anesthesia, having enough energy, etc.

Then again, if I was in my early 20's, then I could understand your worry about excess skin. I think body issues change a little after age and pregnancy. I plan on wearing a body shaper as I lose weight and get excess skin.

I worry about this too. I'm 26 and my surgeon said that exercise will help, but because I'm so young, I have plenty of collagen in my skin that I shouldn't worry too much about excess skin. The good thing, if it happens you can always have it removed.

If you're like me, I think "G-d, I hope it doesn't happen because I really don't want another surgery", but at least the medicine, science, and experts exist to correct the problem, should it occur.

I was worried about excess skin, however for the most part I sort of shrunk back to normal, lol. Naked I was not hot, but in clothing, even tight clothing, no one could see any extra skin. I had plastics this summer and now I am very pleased with my results. I'm 30, so older than you, but I felt fortunate that my skin seems to have retained some youthfulness in my old age! :)

We are/were overweight. By definition we have excess skin :). I believe it's different for everyone as to how it would look after major weight loss. There is always surgery if its bad. To WL's point...don't worry about it now. It is what it is. The benefits out weigh what excess skin will look like after weight loss. Good luck and best wishes!

I do have some excess skin in my belly and under-part of my arms areas. I've lost nearly 140 pounds, so really it could be way worse than it is. But if I had to weigh the benefits from the surgery against the negative of having excess skin, the benefits win every single time. No question about that. You can always work to tone the excess skin, or if it bothers you have it removed. I agree though that if you are active, young, and drink lots of Water, you may have some but it shouldn't be anything terrible. I've added my before/after pic so you can see. I always carried weight in my arms, so I am self-conscious about the extra skin on them, but I actually get a lot of compliments on them strangely enough. If that is your biggest reservation, I think you're in good shape.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
