First week sleeved...quick question

Recommended Posts

hi there. Hoping for a little feedback to give me some perspective. I keep reading about people who have to very carefully and slowly sip Water //fluids for awhile after they are sleeved. I am a week out from surgery and haven't had any issues with drinking anything. I can finish a premiere Protein Shake (I certainly don't guzzle it) in about 45 mins, sipping every few minutes. I can take decent size swigs of water, juice, tea... Also, I am able to consume about 2 cups of egg drop Soup without feeling sick, full or queasy. I may be able to have more, but I don't want to push it. Does this sound reasonable to you guys? I am supposed to be on Full liquids for another 2 weeks and I am just wondering if perhaps some people didn't really feel their fullness until they started eating mushiness or puréed foods. Thanks for your assist and advice. ????

Fluffernut, I was sleeved a week ago Monday and am experiencing the same thing. I have read that the feeling of "restriction" does not come until we start eating food. But wouldn't know yet.

I'd say a shake in 45 min at 2 weeks is normal. You might not feel restriction yet because if fluids but also because the areas healing in stomach may still be numb. Don't push it. Sip and aim for fluid goals and as much Protein as you can. The first time you eat refried Beans of mushy/puréed, you'll probably feel some discomfort. Sounds about right though.

Thanks MaxwellSmart44 and CrazyJaney! Things have been going so well so far that perhaps I am just looking for something to worry about. Really appreciate your replies.

I never felt full on liquids (nor hungry). Soups, Protein Shakes, no fullness. I am on soft foods now and there is quite a difference. That food stays in your stomach a while. Very different from liquids.

I couldn't even get Water into me. I still struggle and I'm 3 months out.

I am 8 days post op and I was starting to think the Dr. didn't remove much of my stomach. I feel like I can eat (drink) to much too. To test myself, today I had 4 ounces of Tomato Soup, no problem at all getting it down, I could even drink Water after, so I ate another 4 ounces of Soup with no problem. 30 minutes later I had a Protein Shake. I hope this changes a bit when I can start eating real food. I am not getting "IM full Stop feeling yet".

Your stomach was just cut, including nerve endings and such. There is going to be some numbness. I would tread carefully and don't overdo it.

2 cups of egg drop Soup seems like way too much at this stage, just my opinion.

Just because you can doesn't mean that you should. :)

Haha, i felt like that too at first, but then if you think about it, its all liquid in and liquid out of your stomach. Your stomach acts differently to liquids than it does solid or even soft foods. Beleive me, in a few weeks you will know you are full when you eat a 1/2 cup of something more dense and get that really uncomfortable feeling in your tummy!

I added small piece of frozen banana to a shake and blended it with some ice. I could feel that little bit of banana. I was about 5 days post op. I am waiting another few days to try it again. SF Jello, with unflavored nectar powder, also seemed to dense for me one week out.

Just wait... I could consume a lot of liquids, too. It just goes through your stomach I think. food though... Nope! Believe me, it is different. Then you will know you have been sleeved.

Still on full liquids and ditto everyone's feedback. On a side note, I have lists of soft food recipes piling up. 5 more days, but who's counting.

That's funny I told my husband the very same thing when I first got home from the hospital....but not 3 weeks out- I'm starting to feel it...They are right, more solids make a difference:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
