Caffeine is bad!

Talk to your nutritionist about this and they will explain why you should not have it.

Good Morning, I'm almost 8 months post-op and I started drinking coffee at 5 months out. I only have one cup a day, in the morning, with sugar substitute and skim milk. I know we are advised against this, but I've had absolutely no problems...or at least no obvious problems. I "admitted" this to the NP in my surgeon's office and she said, in her opinion, one cup a day is not hurting me. I'm not telling you it's OK for you, just answering your question.

Caffeine seems to be a sort of gray area still as far as I can tell. Within my bariatric program one of the nutritionists says we should never have it again because it increases the risk of ulcers with our new smaller stomachs. The other says small amounts would be fine and she isn't as concerned about potential ulcers.

Since all of my pre-surgery classes were with the first nutritionist, it was continually pounded into my head that we can no longer have caffeine, so personally I've avoided it (actually been over a year now since I've had anything caffeinated.

I was given coffee in hospital post op, I asked my surgeon about it, he said it can cause reflux, if you drink it and get reflux then stop drinking it. That was his advice to me guys I've been having a few cups of very strong coffee every day since my surgery almost 8 weeks ago and have had no problems.

My NUT and MD said wait at least 4 weeks post-op to give tummy a time to heal, because of the acidic nature of coffee. I am 3 weeks post-op and drank 4 oz of Breakfast Blend coffee (weakened slightly) with 1 Truvia packet and some sugar free Creamer yesterday...no ill effects whatsoever. (I was drinking 8-12 cups a day pre-op)

My surgeon is okay with regular tea and coffee after the first week. I don't drink it everyday, but haven't had any issues when I do. I like to use a packet of stevia and a little half and half.

I was told to stay away from caffeine and my Dr said Decaf was fine. I use sugar free creamer and put a scoop of unflavored Protein Powder mixed with creamer and it is 10 grams of protein!

i have heard that the caffeine depletes our Calcium. It also is a diuretic which means we need to drink more Water to replace what you loose. Not that you can't have any but watch how much. I think that the Calcium has to be doubled when drinking caffeine.

I work nights and told my nut I have cut way down on coffee. She was like that's great! Then I told her I now need to cut down from the 6-8 caffeine pills a night. Omg. I thought for sure she was going to come unglued. I'm hoping to go to my day position right after this surgery so no more need for that much caffeine.

First off, I'll say that coffee saves lives every day. If I don't get coffee, someone will get hurt. When I first entered the program, I went from 4 cups of coffee down to now, just 1/4th of a cup a day. (golf clap for me!)

Here is the list of people I've asked about coffee so far:

3 people from the post-op support group who all said they now drink coffee 1 year post-op

the exercise physiologist who told me caffeine is her drug of choice and so she just asks that I quit pre-op

the nutritionist gave me some tips on post-op coffee: use truvia or liquid stevia and skim milk

cardiologist just asked me if it made my heart race (no.)

I'm all about following the rules and making healthy changes... but I also really, really love me some coffee.

Enjoy your coffee ! Everything in moderation. If you enjoy it and it goes down well, drink it !

Thanks for the advice everyone!! I've been drinking decaffeinated coffee for about two weeks now with no problem :) I don't drink too much of it. Maybe twice a weeks if that. I have it with splenda and a light cream that only has 1g of sugar

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
