How much are you all able to swallow and hold in your new stomach?

Recommended Posts

Hi! My bypass was 9/22, and on liquid phase. I don't seem to have any limitations to how much Soup I eat or how quickly/slowly I need to drink. How are the rest of you doing? I almost feel like the surgeon only fixed my hernia. ☺️

It looks like you had the sleeve, so I can't offer much advice there as I had Bypass (like most who will respond here in the Bypass forum) but...

I felt the same way in the beginning. I even started to question whether they just poked a few holes, stuck in some stitches and took my life savings.

Luckily, once I got to what I call "real food" stages, I definitely noticed the difference.

I still don't have issues like I read/hear about people not being able to drink more than a sip every few minutes. I can drink 3 or 4 good gulps at a time and when really thirsty can polish off an entire glass in 3 or 4 minutes.

I always felt like I ate too much when I had Soup so after the first few days I gave up on it and moved into other foods. I still avoid soup most of the time for the same reason, though chili is a good emergency go-to when I'm out or can't find a good option in a restaurant. I just make sure to really limit myself to a small cup.

Hi WBL,

I had the bypass too. I'm glad to hear there are other's like me! There have been a couple of times that I started gulping Water, remembered I couldn't and slowed myself down. I'm looking forward to the normal food phase.

My surgery was 9/11. I am able to hold a little more Fluid now than I did last week. By that I mean, 2 swallows, I had to wait for the weird gurgle in my throat and stomach, that tells me yes, you can have another swallow. It's weird, because I only feel that way with liquids, but not with the shakes I make.

Such a big life change - looking forward to better days!

Sorry. Your profile next to all of your posts shows you had the sleeve so I just assumed. Regardless, do your best to take it slow, but I wouldn't sweat it.

I can drink as much Fluid as I want it seems. I have a friend who had to do a barium swallow test and they said they watched what happens once it hits the pouch and it just swirls around a few times and empties. So if you wait a couple minutes between sips you should be able to sip all day. Once you move to softs and solids then you can sip all day minus the 30 mins before and after your meals. That is the case for me anyways I had mine done 9/12

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
