ready to drink protein drinks

Recommended Posts

Are the ready to drink Protein drinks better refrigerated. I bought my first ready to drink EAS AdvantEdge drinks and noticed it did not say anything, but seems to me they would be better.

And post surgery, do cold items affect the pouch?

Hi, I can only answer with my own experience, which is 6 days post surgery (RNY). I spent the day yesterday extremely nauseated with every single tiny sip of anything. Any temperature.

This morning, I started out slowly with tiny sips of Water that I held in my mouth until they met body temperature and then just kind of let them sneak a trickle at a time down my throat, now I am in my 2nd hour of drinking my morning vanilla Protein hidden in a cup of Decaf coffee. So far, so good.

I hear this all gets better as the days pass.

Yes, they are MUCH better cold. I can't stand the EAS shakes, but even so, I've had them in a pinch while traveling and my fave (Premier Protein) or runner-up (Pure Protein) weren't available.

As for post-surgery, we're all different but I've had zero problems with cold or Hot drinks. I drink an ice cold Premier Protein almost every morning for Breakfast (except those times I've been traveling or some occasion I feel like eggs).

After surgery I prefer everything as cold as possible. I even dilute juice by chewing on ice..it just helps me have less pain and can help soothe the inflammation you have post op.

I haven't tried EAS, I have tried Premier Protein and I didn't like it..I'm the odd man out on that one I know! A friend suggested Six Star shakes from Walmart (it's their own brand) and the chocolate is so good, tastes like chocolate milk and occasionally if I'm having trouble tolerating something, I'll mix it with a little bit of milk or chocolate Syrup just to change it up a bit. Those by far have been the best tasting pre-mades I have ever had. Also, I HATE Isopure..ick!

They all taste better cold. I have tried atleast six different brands since my surgery. I like the GNC brand pre mixed the best. Only 170 calories, no sugar , and 25 gram of Protein. And the best tasting of all the ones I have tried. I mix it with some ice and fresh strawberries and blueberries for a great tasting drink.

I found the sweet taste yucky, but I noticed my plan allow me to add a tablespoon of plain, low fat yogurt, and an inch of a banana and that helped a bunch.

Trying two frozen strawberries next.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
