Body changes first, then weight changes

Recommended Posts

I was curious if anyone else has gone through this. I am over 3 months out now and here is what I am experiencing. I will go days even a few weeks with no weight loss. I will notice changes in my body with how clothes fit. In other words, I know I am getting smaller.

I do not however see it on the scale. Eventually, maybe 2 or 3 days after I notice the change, I will see 2 or 3 pounds come off on the scale. I only mention it for a few reasons.

1. I have lost weight plenty of times and have never really noticed this routine before.

2. If you are not losing weight at the rate that you had hoped for, I think it is critical to have measurements to see that progress. I have had stalls of up to 3 weeks already and these measurements have helped me to realize that I am on the right path and keeps me from getting frustrated with the process.

It sounds petty to say it but when you are losing 5 - 7 pounds a week in the beginning, 1 - 2 a week seems like a letdown. I have to remember there is a lot less of me to lose. I have switched to weighing myself every 3 - 4 days as well to limit my frustration. I can actually vary day to day by 2 pounds.

Thanks so much for this post. I have had struggles losing weight for years. Hence why I find myself here. I was sleeved on 9/15 and had a great first 8 days. Lost 12 pounds in that first 8 days and then nothing. I am now 14 days post op and actually gained a pound. UGH!!! I know people are saying be patient and it happens to everyone but I don't really buy that. I don't think any of those people that are saying that stalled or whatever on day 8 for crying out loud. But thank you I will take my measurements and see where I stand!

Yeah...I am down 35 lbs since I started liquid diet on Sept 2. I was sleeved on Sept 16. I had lost 16 lbs before surgery and 19 lbs after surgery. The last 4 days I've gained two lbs..so I have just decided not to take it so seriously. There will be Ebs and flows...but it will come off. I still sometimes check it daily, but evaluate it weekly.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
