How much of your daily protein comes from supplements?

Recommended Posts

I am almost four months post-op. I get in anywhere from 70-100g Protein everyday, but I am still heavily dependent upon supplemental drinks and bars to hit those numbers. I love my Protein hot chocolate drink and will have 2 of those plus 1 muscle milk and 1 bar daily. The rest of my daily protein comes from beef Jerky, edamame, chicken, and beef. But, I would guess that 70% comes from supplements.

I am loosing weight like crazy (after a four week stall) and I feel great! My nut said that for a low starting bmi'er, I'm the fastest looser she's seen!!

I am just really curious how other people hit their daily protein goals and how dependent they are on the supplements? ??

What Protein hot chocolate are you using? I am one 6 days post op and warm is hitting the spot more easily than cold. Thanks!

Yeah, I had problems with cold the first couple of weeks. I would dilute apple juice w/water and heat it in the micro. It was so so soothing to my sleeve.

I get a brand called Fast Track. My surgeons office sells it. Each packet (mixed w/ 8oz water) is 15g. Protein. The hot chocolate comes in all sorts of flavors...I'm loving the raspberry and mint.

I am still in full liquids as surgery was 9/22. I drink 46 g of Syntrax Nectar daily and then pure Protein or muscle milk or unflavored Syntrax to cream Soup to get my protein in. I blended frozen banana half into pure protein the last two days but it is too soon.

How does your body handle the jerkey? It seems like that would be tough to digest. Would love edamame... That sounds divine

I'm just over 9 months post op and I don't track, so I don't know what my total Protein intake is. But I do have a 30-40g smoothie every day. And M-F I have a whole grain or Protein Bar (5-20g protein) as a snack/lunch at work. Besides the smoothie and bar I eat 5-6 times a day. Because I know I'm getting a good amount of protein with the supplements , I feel OK about eating more veggies, fruit and grains for some of my meals. I think a well balanced diet is important for long term health.

I was really surprised about the beef Jerky too. No trouble digesting it. Actually, it is a slider food for me. I can eat a lot of it at one time and it doesn't make me feel ill, so I need to watch myself because the sodium content is crazy high. Another good food for me is Hummus. My grocery carries a white bean hummus which is higher in protein and tastes even better than traditional chickpea hummus. Love that stuff.

When I was on full liquids I blended a half banana into my shakes and it sat so heavy and made me ill that I haven't tried it since. I'm sure I'd be fine now. I can eat nearly everything now, but most things just don't appeal to me anymore. Yay!!

At 1 year post-op I don't rely on supplements much at all. Maybe a Protein shake for lunch or Breakfast a couple times a week and if I need a boost, I will add Protein hot chocolate in the evening. From time to time when I need a "reset" I'll return to 2 or 3 days of Protein shakes only, but otherwise mine comes mostly from "real food" at this point.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
