Really upset with psych

Recommended Posts

I got a letter in the mail from the psychologist saying they were denying my surgery because I have to learn to love myself more in the body I'm in. Wtf kind of crap is that. I loved myself just fine before I became incapacitated. When I could walk well and get around I was fine. When I could work and not feel like a drain on the family I was wonderful. I am sometimes self conscious but I usually get around that with humor. I need to get this weight of asap. It's not a vanity issue its my life.my bp is sky high someone's even with my meds. I . Have just crossed over into full blown diabetes. I know what I need to do. I've lost 7 lbs in a month. I'm filling out my fitness pal every day and 90% keeping it below 1200 cal. I'm committed to this. I'm even down to 2 cups of coffee a day( down from never having an empty cup.) Good Lord all I want to do is get better. How someone who has met me once can make decisions like that is beyond me. I thought it would be the insurance company giving me a hard time... this is my drs psychologist. I am furious

Congrats on making so many positive changes. BOO to the psychologist. Stay the course. Jump threw the hoops. You WILL get there. I thought psych eval was to ferret out eating disorders...

If this Psych is the only option you have, start going to therapy with that person. It really is unfair to judge someone from one psych visit but it happens all of the time. My advice is to just start going to that person for therapy. It would be a way to work out any issues that you do have (we all have issues) and hopefully after a few sessions, get a green light for surgery.

The problem with that is his office is 50 miles away and to be honest, I can't afford 50.00 every time I walk into his office, then the NUT office and then the dr. And he makes all his patients buy bariatric Vitamins and advantage. I love my doctor but this is gonna make me crazy. Also if I don't get out done by Jan 31st as planned then I have a butt load of co pays. So irate

I've had a rough 4 years. Between deaths of people extremely close to me, losing the job and house I loved because of the recession and a major move to a place I knew no-one I could be doing worse

I'd talk to your surgeon. Maybe he can send you to someone else for a second eval.

Your Dr. "Makes" you buy particular products? Sounds like a conflict of interest on his part. Vitamins are Vitamins. You may have to take several different pills or chewables to get the same nutrition available in a single bariatric product, but my instructions were that the delivery system doesn't matter. Getting all the vitamins does on the proper schedule. I was advised by my coordinator to get my vitamins at Walmart and given a list of the mg's and when\how often to take what. I've been compliant (it does take a bit of work to keep the schedule) and my blood work is perfect.

As far as they psych goes, I'm sorry you've had a difficult time. Maybe try to get a second opinion?

You should go to a different psyc. He can't force you to use his. I know it's expensive, but call around and see what the going rate is...this sounds like life or death to you. You can work on "loving yourself " when you are off of BP and diabetes medication. The power these people have makes me so mad.

Oh, and it's nice to like your surgeon, but his purpose is just to do the surgery and let you go on with your life. I would also consider finding a new one.

its good youv already put into the practice your new lifestyle. keep it up. :) I know what your going thru on the psych part. of course I had to see the staff affiliated with my surgeon as well, when I got to my app with their psych fortunatly she was very nice an easy to talk to. of course going thru their questions I was honest, an I told her I see this other one full time have been for yrs an I really like her to. she says they do these evaluations to see if we honestly realize what we are going to go thru the difficulties emotionally an mentally that this will cause an they have to make sure we are stable in those areas. and of course i told her I had been thinking about this off an on for over 10 yrs, an it got to the point 2 of my specialists referred me to have this done. I didnt have a problem with her but I had to get my regular psych dr to release me ...so she faxed the release papers to her an my dr agreed to everything except she made a notation at the bottom saying that at our last visit which was 2 months earlier that I "seemed" upset or on edge or uneasy. well the staff called me an told me she knew if she submitted this release to my Ins with the rest of all my paperwork that they would deny me..so I told her DO NOT send that in yet I will call an get into talk with her an see WHY she wrote that lil note. so I called that day got an app that next wk and went in and talked to her.. I convinced her I was better an that I am looking forward to this life changing step an that I am very excited. she then told me she would be happy to release me..sure enough she did . They just have to touch all bases...an yes eating disorders are a question as well. but It has been some what of a struggle mentally an emotionally the first month. it was brutal. some ppl do great some ppl struggle. I struggled some. as far as the Vitamins an etc to buy from him, if its costly I would talk to him an tell him what your prepared to do, I didnt have to do that. I get mine at whole foods or a natural living. But if I was you , I know its hard to get into psychs youll need a referral, call the office an have them refer you to another one, if they dont have another one they use, or if you dont have one you personally see regularly, go to yur primary an have them refer you to one. there might be one closer. if your stuck with the one you already seen I would make another app with them asap an get in there an have along talk an ask why they or he or she said what they did. thats just me. but I would jump on this quickly it takes time to get thru this process. wish you the best..hang in there..it will happen.. :)

I am so glad my Psych is also a very successful bariatric patient. She knows all the issues first hand.

The Vitamin and Bariatric Advantage purchase is for the 2 weeks before the surgery to shrink my liver fat. I get that. I was going to a grief counselor so I made an appt with her top see if she could help me. I had an interview this morning for a part time job. I'll call the doctor office tomorrow to see what else I can do. I really want to have my surgery at Baptist so that doctor is my only choice.

I would call the psych and ask why they wrote that and what action steps you need to take. Play nice find another doc while playing nice and get another eval. Be saccharine during that eval. Submit.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
