My surgery is day after tomorrow. So I am on Clear Liquids now and I am STARVING! My question is, are you hungry during the liquid phases after surgery? If I am this hungry afterwards, I don't think I will make it...

No I was not hungry and I was on a two week pre op diet.

Clear liquids only? Did you have any Protein? I was able to drink Protein shakes. It makes a big difference curbing your appetite! I had 3 or 4 of them a day and minimized carbs. My NUT allowed 1100 calories; I took in between 630 - 750 for 9 days. My liver did shrink. After surgery it won't be as hard. Your interest in food will go way down.

Yes I'm drinking Unjury chicken Soup and the strawberry flavor in sugar free lemonade. So that is where I'm getting the Protein. I just hope I don't feel this level of hunger post-op. :)

It was a few months post op until I felt hunger. Hope it's the same for you!

Oh thanks! That is good to hear. It is taking every ounce of will power that I have right now to not eat. Think I will try to sleep instead. :)

I am 2 weeks out tomorrow and I do feel hunger but it's not the same as before. Much easier to control now and while I know I like pizza (and all the other junk we all used to eat) I don't crave it anymore. I know I will taste some of it again eventually and I'm good with that. Thank goodness cause I was going crazy on my 2 week liquid only pre op diet. It gets better. Good luck!!

Check out http://proteinartist.com and The World According to Eggface, http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/. Hopefully, if you take in 60 - 80 grams of Protein per day and LIKE it, it won't require so much willpower, and you will feel more satisfied. .

After surgery, I had NO hunger. I am 3 weeks out and am just now finding food appealing and getting any appetite. Still no hunger pangs whatsoever.

I don't feel hunger, sometimes I feel gas bubbles, but no hunger. It is the strangest sensation. In my head I know I need to eat something, but even some broths and Soups I ate before just don't smell as good. I still love the smell of pizza and toast lol, but they don't make my tummy rumble in hunger. Before, if I smelled pizza I had to have some, even being on liquids it really doesn't bother me

I feel the same way. I'm out 3 days from surgery and just don't care about food. It might as well be cardboard.

I was so blistfully NOT hungry after surgery. While in the hospital I was supposed to have 1/2 cup of liquids 6-8 times a day. I could only get 1/4 2 times a day in (not including water). I LOVED it. At 2-3 weeks the hunger came back full force.

The hunger hit me at about 3-4 months. Luckily, just a spoon of food and I'm good to go. This morning, I made imitation sour cream and it is perfect for adding necessary fats and calories to a Protein meal. Fills me up pretty quickly.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
