I just finally scheduled my surgery for 10/29 and I just read that if you are having any dental work you should let your respective surgeon and dentist know about your procedures. I recently got a root canal and now I need a crown. So I called my surgeon's office and they told me that it's really up to me and my dentist to do the crown before or after surgery. So, I called my dentist and they are telling me that it's up to me whether I start my crown procedure before or after my surgery. She said whether I have the temporary filling or the temporary crown I run the risk of disturbing either one. This could be true but it just doesn't sound right to me. I decided to wait and do it post-op so my dentist's office scheduled part 1 of my crown procedure one week after my surgery. This will require novocaine. Anyone think this is too soon to do post-op?

Interestingly enough, I too have been going through dental issues and the solution is to do an implant on this one molar. My Bypass is 10/29 and I realize this couldn't have come at the worst time. My thinking, will the implant be able to have the necessary bone growth while I go on this gastric bypass crash diet. Probably not. Now, I too don't know what to do about my implant specially since insurance will take a week or so to approve it and that places it 2 weeks prior to surgery. Blast! No way. I may have to wait 6 months. Fortunately it's a molar but it will put a damper on my chewing for 25 minutes bariatric meal plan.

I think one week after surgery may be a little soon. I would make sure all healing of your sleeve is behind you. I am terrified of blood clot complications. All of the bariatric doctors I talked to, who lost a patient or two, was due to deep vein thrombosis (aka blood clot to lungs or brain). I am not sure when the stomach would be completely healed, ask doc. If it were me, 4 weeks after would be wise.

My instincts tell me to wait on it so I'm going to reschedule the crown procedure. My dentist told me last time I saw him that it would have to be done within 6 months of getting the root canal so there's really no rush, I just wanted to get it over with.

As far as the crash diet and your implant are concerned, wouldn't taking a good Calcium supplement help or would the combination still not provide enough to support to the implant prior to surgery?

Beni! I am a surgical assistant in the dental field. I would hold off on your implant. Going the the sleeve surgery and post op after is not going to effect your bone. Stay up on your Multi Vitamins and Calcium. You will adjust missing that tooth. Wait until your healed then go have it placed. Don't stress about it nothing will happen

Thank you Kimberly1184. I will hold off on the implant. The last thing I want is extra pain to deal with. I just feel bad because my chewing, which I am supposed to do for 20 minutes per meal will be less efficient. That tooth cracked all the way through eating a corn chip and had to be removed. Imagine that!

On other side of my mouth I have a sensitive tooth with a filling. It was done when I was a child and recently redone a month ago. It's now super sensitive. It will eventually require a root canal but I am waiting to see if it will calm down. Blast. Both sides of my mouth are in trouble. I will have to chew for 20 minutes with my front teeth. It's a good thing I am not going out to eat for a while! I will look very odd but if chipmunks do it, so can I.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
