Just started on soft foods and I was wondering what everyone does at the beginning to get the 60 grams of Protein each day. I made an egg and couldn't eat it all. Will I have to continue with Protein Shakes for awhile?

I'm in the pureed (some soft foods) phase now and I am still having to do two shakes a day to supplement my Protein. I JUST posted an average day of food on another thread to show how I can usually get 80-85 grams of Protein per day:

Here's a link to my post in that thread: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/320244-protein-protein-protein/#entry3611585

I put unflavored Protein power into my 30 gram Protein pre-made shakes. I also put a scoop in my morning yogurt. Boy, you're lucky. My doctor said I should be getting about 80-85 grams of protein for the first 3 months. That is really hard.

I finally got in with a nutritionist and have my first appointment on Monday. I don't think I'm getting enough Calcium either. What amount did your doctor recommend for Calcium?

I don't think I'm getting enough Calcium either. What amount did your doctor recommend for calcium?

I found this quote:

"The daily dose of calcium intake from diet and as citrated supplement for bariatric patients is 1,200 mg – 2,000 mg of elemental calcium, as recommended by American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, The Obesity Society, and The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists."

I know it's very important to take calcium citrate not calcium carbonate after weight loss surgery. I had to switch, as I had been taking Tums for calcium prior to surgery. It also wasn't until I started researching WLS that I learned that calcium and Iron should be taken at least 2 hours apart. I had always taken my Tums and Multivitamin (contained iron) at the same time every morning. So I'm glad I learned that tip prior to surgery, even if it is kind of a pain to keep track of now, since i have to take a Multivitamin 3 times a day and calcium 2 times a day!

Good to know that Calcium and Iron should be taken at least 2 hours apart!! My doctor also said to take Vitamin D with my calcium. I was told to get 2000 mg per day.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
