spelmanite10 42 Posted September 22, 2014 So ive been on my Pre op diet for like 4 weeks. I had gained some weight and needed to get back down so I did Atkins induction. Today I wake up week as hell. Turns out I might have a Iron deficiency meaning my primary care doc will tell surgeon and I may not be able to have surgery if my numbers are too low or don't bounce back by time my clearance date which is Monday next week. I hope everything is OK. Has anyone experienced low iron and has it impacted your surgery.
Dana825 82 Posted September 23, 2014 Maybe you should consider taking a Iron supplement. I have to take Iron and a Multivitamin because of anmenia due to my irregular menstrual bleeding. I talked with my surgeon about it and he advised me to increase my iron intake to twice a day. That's another reason why I'm so ready to have surgery on Oct 7th. My menstrual has been so irregular as my weight has increased. But I hope this helps. The sooner you can begin taking an iron supplement the better. Double check with your doctor. AvaFern 3,516 Posted September 23, 2014 I would take an Iron supplement, which should get your values to where they need to be. Also, on Atkins, aren't you allowed to eat steak? That will also do wonders for your levels. Maybe the reason you feel crummy is because you cut out carbs? Isn't that also part of Atkins? The first 6-8 months after surgery I craved steak and I think it was probably because I was a little anemic. I always felt better afterwards.
spelmanite10 42 Posted September 23, 2014 Ive done Atkins before and never felt that way after cutting carbs. The atkins was the same thing my doctor or asked me to do as a pre.op diet I just started it earlier. I can't take supplements according to hospital because of anesthesia concerns. They made me stop taking my Multivitamin and Vitamin D. I don't know im going to wait for the hospital to call back. My primary care doc told me to eat spinach since I couldn't take the pills
Dana825 82 Posted September 23, 2014 Spinach is a great source of Iron. Everything will be fine. What date is your surgery scheduled for?
