Hello everyone. I'm trying to get information about how long I'm going to have to go without my meds. I take psych. meds., Lyrica, synthroid, I could go on, but I'm really worried. If I'm only eating 1 to 2 oz. Of food, how.is it going to taste with a hand full of pills crushed and opened in it? Anyone?

I have been concerned about the same thing. In fact, once I take the myriad of required pills I take now, I feel sick if on an empty stomach. Sometimes, I think I won't be able to do what is required! Scared.

I made sure to ask my surgeon about this. I have chronic pain and take a wide variety of meds for pain, muscle spasms, depression, etc. he reviewed the list one by one with me to tell me how each med would be affected by the surgery. Make sure you talk to your surgeon about each of your meds before surgery!

I just saw my surgeon today for my pre-op appt. I asked her about pills. She said I could have one teaspoon of Greek yogurt with my pills. She said it is kind of bitter anyway so the taste won't be too bad.

One question you can ask your doctor is: does this med also come in a topical or patch form? For muscle spasms I use a Lidocaine patch. Works marvelous!

Many meds come in a topical or gel form which might help if you take a lot by mouth.

Is that crushing the meds with the yogurt?

Yes, crush the pills and put them in the yogurt.

I discussed my med with my docs. Psych pills and pain meds sometimes have to be changed due to malabsorption issues and the new pouch, specially if they are time released in any way.

Many of the other medications will be stopped all together or given as a liquid, or in a more manageable size that can be crushed, but since the surgery changes our bodies so drastically, we won't be taking as many or maybe any at all after surgery.

You just have to discuss it with all of your doctors before surgery.

Crush up your pills and down the hatch. You can do it. If you are taking pain pills trust me you will do it once your in withdrawals.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
