What protein drinks are you buying in UK

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I can see lots of postings from the US which give details of proprietary Protein drinks being used in the liquid diet post-op phase,

but most of them seem to be unavailable in the UK.

It would be interesting to know what experiences locals have had with UK products and which ones they were?

Kind regards

Andy

Hi Selena,

Many thanks for the reply - it looks very interesting and easily available.

I see it has quite a high carb content - is this recommended?

Regards

Andy

Hi Andy, there weren't any shakes recommended to me when I had my sleeve done, or anytime since - I've just found these on my own, so perhaps they are a bit high on the carb side. I just watch what else I eat. I also found a really nice tasting powder based shake on Amazon - Smartec Whey-fx Protein - its really nice in Strawberries and Cream.

How would you rate the powder versus the liquid:

Do you have to drink the drink-made-from-powder there and then or will it keep through the day?

I'm thinking that pre-mix may be easier to just grab-and-go from the fridge rather than messing around making small quantities of powder up.

I actually prefer the taste of the powder variety, but as you say - the premade is a lot easier - My job is a lot of driving, so its easier to just grab one out of the fridge on the way out.

I've not tried keeping the powder variety for longer than an hour or so, so can't comment on how well it keeps, sorry.

That's great - many thanks!

It's always easier to glean from someone who has been there before :)

I am 18 months out and have never had a shake. Ever.

I decided at the outset that I needed to be able to eat "normal" food as I have a life where eating out is a regular thing. Drinking shakes felt like being on a diet whereas I wanted to acknowledge that I had a new "normal" in relation to food - I didn't want a food substitute, I wanted to make good food choices in the real world. I also saw some people who seemed to rely on shakes way past when they should have done and then struggled to wean themselves off them.

I fortified milk (added skimmed milk powder to skimmed milk) to add significantly to my Protein intake without adding carbs. I also added skimmed milk or the powder to Soups in the first few weeks, which gave me additional Protein with little effort.

Worked for me. Reached my target in about 8 months and I can eat pretty much anything now - just smaller amounts :-)))) But each to their own, I just knew shakes were not for me....

Good luck!

Hi Indigo

It sounds like you're in a similar situation to me where eating out is a prerequisite of your job.

I have been considering the fortification idea but just don't seem to be able to get my head around adding milk powder to soup... Yuk!

I never used any Protein Drinks, I cant stand milk type drinks I just vomit, I did try a juice type Protein Drink I got from tescos but it was nasty so got binned. I needed to be able to cope with family life and to be able to eat normal foods. I just ate more Protein and kept the carbs to an absolute minimum where possible. In the early days that was hard but it does get easier.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
