When can I eat rice

Recommended Posts

It depends on the guidelines from your surgeon. I wasn't allowed any grains for the first six months because my surgeon's plan is low carb, intensely focused on Protein. Even after six months I'm only allowed grains on rare occasions.

If your surgeon's plan allows it. FYI, rice is iffy for many of us. It was my final "hold out" food as far as what I was able to tolerate. Problem was it would "float" on me, (no I wasn't drinking with meals), causing foamies, reflux, etc. Once I passed the 6 month mark it was a problem no longer. I can do half a sushi roll without issue.

i am 13 wks out and on all foods since week 8. i have had rice a few times. the issue for ME is that there is so little room and rice can take up a lot of it. i use about 1 TBSP with 1/2 cup of chinese for my lunch. that's it. no more.

i have found that my tastes for most starchy carbs is really dull now.

My surgeon recommended that I not have rice, bread, Pasta or pizza for the first six months. I tried eating rice but it didn't agree with my new tummy. I would suggest you talk to your surgeon and NUT about what is allowed on your plan.

I'm Thai so, rice is like bread to me and I thought I cannot live without it, so since I started the solid food I tried many times to eat rice but it didn't really go well especially if the rice is too dry, I would throw up!! Japanese rice is a bit stickier and softer but I still cannot eat more than a tablespoon (I eat Protein first, then vegetable, rice is the last thing).

It's quite bizarre for me living without rice, I know it's also psychological thing so what I do is if I want rice I just put it on my plate and eat it the last. At the end, I couldn't fill it in my tumny anyway, and I feel satisfied lol.

Oh PS my surgeon didn't give me any restrictions on rice or carbs, he said I should eat a bit of everything.

Many people enjoy rice but I do not eat rice by choice. I did have a small amount at four months out. It felt like I had swallowed a football and sat like a rock in my stomach. I have since learned that rice expands after you eat it. It fills you quickly and does not have much in the way of nutritional value.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
