What happened to me this morning ?

Recommended Posts

I am 3 weeks post op... Woke up ... Made a Protein Shake ... Have not had one in a while because I entered into soft foods... Been having an egg white for Breakfast ... However I was in a hurry... Made my shake and added a teaspoon of peanut butter... Which my paper said I could have...drank it... About 10 minutes by... I got horrible diarrhea and wanted to throw up... It passed in about an hour... What happened ? It's Sunday but I am going to call my doctor tomorrow. Any ideas? Alyce

Sounds like dumping syndrome. You may be sensitive to sugar -- and a lot of commercial Peanut Butter has sugar added. Or there may have been something else in your Protein Shake with sugar in it.

You would probably want to check with your medical team (particularly if this happens again), don't accept my internet nonprofessional diagnosis ^_^

Dumping syndrome is much more common among gastric bypass patients but it does happen to a small percent of sleeve patients as well.

Funny thing is after surgery, the sleeve develops a mind of it's own. What you might have liked before, may no longer agree with you. So, be prepared for changes. As in unexpected and sometimes uncomfortable or even embarrassing changes. (ie: noises, smells, gas, and as you have experienced.....diarrhea, etc.)

Try to relax and let time get you used to the changes. Some will be temporary and pass......others you will adjust too. If any serious symptoms persist, by all means check with you Doc.

At eight months out, I'm used to most weird things going on with my bod.

So again, try to relax and take note of the changes and adjust accordingly. ;)

Aaaahhh ... the sudden diarrhea.

I'm 34 days post-op, I've had that happen at least twice ... and both times was in the morning not long after a big Protein shake.

Don't worry about it. You're going to experience more than a few strange things before this is over. And most of 'em just happen. And then don't happen anymore.

If it was a reaction to Peanut Butter, don't despair. What your body doesn't tolerate now, it will probably tolerate in a month or two. How it is now is certainly not how it will be in a few months.

One step, one day, one month at a time is my mantra. :)

I did a dumb thing yesterday, I'm three weeks post surgery decided that I would take all my Vitamins at the same time. I felt really hot and nauseous for about two hours. This is all a learning experience as we go and get used to our new life with a sleeve. I really hate the b-12 vitamins they smell sooooo bad and you belch them for a while. I had never taken b-12 before the surgery, I do like that it gives you energy, it's just the smell ????

Someone told me (a bazillion years ago) that worrying was like meditating to achieve a bad result.

Instead, you could gather up all your worry energy and spend it differently -- by thinking about how GOOD the future might turn out to be?

It might actually work. :)

@@alyce20 If you find out it's the Peanut Butter you have a problem with, try PB2. It's a powdered Peanut Butter and works great in shakes.

@@sherrie1957 I take the NatureMade sublingual B-12. It's cherry flavored and actually quite good. Maybe try switching?

Thank you for the suggestion, I'll go over to Amazon and see if I can't find them. I even put them in a drawer because they smell through the bottle on my night stand :). This has been my worst thing of the surgery :)

Thank you, I got those ordered, I had signed up for auto delivery at the surgeons office, I'm going to have to cancel all the autos except the main Vitamins. I didn't like the chewable Probiotics either. I don't think I used to be this picky, but now some things really bother me. Thanks again for the information

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
