For those of you tracking your intake of macronutrients, do you just just try to stay under a certain limit for overall carbs, or do you just worry about your net carbs (total carbs - Fiber = net carb intake)?

From the research I've done, some nutritionists mention net carbs something to measure and others don't use the term at all, so I'm not sure how "legit" the whole idea is.

I worry about having enough Protein intake for each day, followed by calories--trying keep within the guidelines suggested by my APRN. I try to avoid carbs and never worried about having too few.

Oh, I'm not worrying about too few carbs. I try to keep my carb intake as low as possible, but depending on if we count net carbs or not, for me there's an average intake of either 43.2g or 23g (which either way I guess is pretty good, since I'm average 110.5g of protein). It's just that 20g is quite a difference, and if we do indeed only count net carbs, I could afford to add in some more veggies and legumes on some days, which would be really nice.

I count Protein first, NET carbs, and total calorie intake. My surgeon recommends staying under 50 grams of net carbs per day.

@ that sounds doable. Like I said, I'm a-okay on Protein. And keeping it under 50g net carbs sounds downright luxurious at this point!

my doctor did address carbs. it was 30 total carbs a meal and 12 carbs for Snacks.

I count net carbs. For the first six months post surgery I kept carb levels at 50 or less. This was a great spot to be to maximize weight loss.

As my activity and exercise increased I found that I needed to increase carb levels to get the energy I needed. I increased to 70-80 and found this to be a good level. Currently, at 9 months out, I try to maintain 70-80 net carbs a day. On occasion I do go slightly higher, but only if my exercise or activity level is significant.

Wow, this is all great info. I was worried I was too high with 20-25g net carbs a day. I'm still losing though, so I won't try and take it up too much higher, but it's good to know I don't have to feel bad if I go up to 30 or 40g every now and then.

My question would be to the NUT: where are you getting your info from? If it is solid medical research and that's pretty up to date, fine. Otherwise, if it is a case of several medical articles saying one thing and there is another saying the opposite, its then up to the NUT based on their experience. That may or may not work for you.

If what works now, that they're suggesting, works for you, great! If not, find out if you try something else.

Hi I had lap band surgery about 4 years ago ... It worked well initially lost about 40 kgs then I started putting weight on. Recently (3 months ago) I started LCHF I'm finally back losing weight again. I'm wondering if anyone is also doing LCHF ?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
