Water retention?

Recommended Posts

Have a question for you please. Have been banded 3 and a bit weeks now, this week I have upped my Water intake as I have struggled to "enjoy" water as much as before. I'm currently drinking about 1-1.5 litres over a day (no tea or coffee). Most of this water seems to be drank mid to late afternoon as I tend to feel really dehydrated at this time. In no way am I cheating with my puréed portions I'm allowed to have currently as suggested by the nutritionist, but I still seem to be putting on a little weight each day. To date this week it's been as high as 1.5kg which is making me a little disheartened. My only thinking is my body must be retaining some of the water I'm drinking, I'm not peeing very much either (just thought I would tell you that). Can anyone shed some light on the subject please?

First, you're not drinking enough Water. You should be drinking closer to 2-3 litres a day.

Second, you also shouldn't be concerned with weight gains or losses during the recovery stage.

How much weight did you lose pre-op and post-op? What kind of purees are you consuming and how much? If you're consuming carbohydrate rich purees, your body will retain a lot of fluids.

Plateauing during the first 2-4 weeks is normal and gaining a few lbs of Water is typical. Read this article about the 2 week plateau:

3 weeks prior to op I lost 9.6kg. My puréed veg are pumpkin, sweet potato broccoli and cauli, including my meat portion is equal to half a cup.

Post op 3 weeks I have lost 6kg. Weight loss prior surgery and to this date is 29kg.

I will certainly read the article and most definitely will be upping my Water intake again.

Your a wealth of knowledge 2muchfun, thank you.

You're about where I was in my journey after surgery. I lost 12 lbs the first 2 weeks and then nothing for the next 3.5 months. I was in Bandster Hell. BH is when your stoma(band opening) is still wide open and you can still eat as much as before. It's basically a diet till you get a few fills to get a little restriction/satiety.

But, you're doing just about as well as most and better than some. Just keep following the rules as much as you can and once you start getting fills you'll see a big improvement.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
