HI,

I had a lapband done September 2013. I had it removed November 2013 during two emergency surgeries involving a grapefruit size abscess full of infection and a deteriorated stomach. April 1 2014 I went into another surgery where infection was removed from my abdomen. I am now facing my 5th and hopefully final surgery on Monday September 22, 2014. I did have to accept life changes with the band and have kept some of them in play, so I have my head wrapped around that part of it. But has anyone else had a revision from a lap band to a full gastric bypass? I am only 25 and this has been one of the scariest years of my life. But I am looking forward to being able to give my daughter the correct examples to live by. Does anyone have any suggestions or hints?? OH, I am a full time REALTOR and I do own my own company, so I am hoping recovery time won't be too bad!!

I had a revision from lapband to rny 4 months ago. The surgery/ recovery time was easier than the band. I am not the only one I heard this from. Although it takes a while to get pass feeling tired. I could have gone back to work within a week or two. I had only gas pain and took pain medicine once.

I am so glad to not have a band any more.

I had the lapband done in 2008 and removed in 2013. I am scheduled to have gastric bypass on Oct. 20th. So I don't know a lot yet, but will let you know more as I go along here....

Recovery from my band removal was ALOT more painful than having it put in. So I am worried about pain after bypass. Along with fatigue from not having food, etc.

But I'll keep you updated!

I had my lapband removed and bypass three days ago. My recovery so far hasn't been that bad. A little bit of pain and some gas. I took a shower today and it felt great. I think my biggest obstacle is getting in all of my fluids. I've been eating a variety of sugar free popsicles, Jello, plain Water, and crystal light. Next week after I see my surgeon, he will advance me to full liquid.

I really wasn't sure I wanted the bypass and I'm still scared about all the changes.

I know that having the lapband removed was the right thing to do, I struggled with it for the last few years.

Good luck and hope everything works out for you.

Same here. Had band in 2008, removed in Dec. 2013 and am scheduled for bypass on Monday! I met with my surgeon yesterday and he's concerned--even told me I should consider the sleeve instead of bypass because the stomach tissue could be compromised. I'm still set on the bypass, but now I'm scared. I was perfectly calm and ready to go before I talked with him. <_<

He said he's had to put a temporary feeding tube in patients like me before to give that stomach opening area a GOOD 2 weeks to heal before being introduced to any food/drink.

I'm an optimist though, so I'm going in with the plan that the stomach tissue will all be fine and I won't need a feeding tube!

I had gotten the band in Jan. 2014. I had to have it removed in March because the port was infected. I was told that the scar tissue on my stomach was bad and that I couldn't get another band. I can get the RNY but the incision is going to be just below where the scar tissue is. I'm just really scared.

You will do just fine. I am 4 weeks post op from the revision and am as new as can be. I had to have a few new scars but if you rub cocoa butter and Vitamin E oil on them it should lessen the severity of the scar. My new scars are lighter than my old ones.

Thank you AuriP. I'm praying all goes well. My doctor said that he is going to try and use the same "holes" but may have to make new ones because I have a lot of scar tissue under the main hole (where the port was.) After the second surgery that hole had to be left opened and close from the inside out. It was really gross, so if I can avoid that again, that would be great.

I had the RNY on the 20th, after having my band out last December. Mine went well also. The only bad part for me was the 2 1/2" scar I had from where they took the port out was still sore when I touched that area. (I'm assuming scar tissue) Well, with this surgery they used that same incision, so it's really sore now. :-( I think they did clean up some of the scar tissue though, so hopefully when it's all healed up it won't be so tender.

But yes, the surgery in general went well!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
