Weight lifting after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello all! I'm getting pretty close to getting my surgery, and was thinking, I'd like to build muscle post-op, will I be able to lift heavy again after I have the surgery? My goal is to attempt to build a good amount to compensate for the loose skin I'll deal with, and I like lifting weights anyways. Thanks! :)

Onceyour surgoen gives you an okay, you can start lifting again. I weight train twice a week. Just start easy and slowly increase the weight as you get stronger.

Hi Kyle,

I waited until I had the go ahead from my surgeon (about 4-6 weeks if I recall). I'm now 14 months out and see a trainer 3 times a week and we lift weights each time. Just take it easy to start, especially as everything heals internally.

I'm still waiting for my go-ahead. I asked my nut at around 4 weeks post-op and they really advised against it as the surgery cuts through your abdominal wall. Hopefully at my 3 month post-op I'll get the go ahead. Is anyone doing crossfit?

It's amazing how weak you feel when you go back to the gym. But I am now 6+ months post op and lifting heavy again. Just take it very slow at first.

Discuss with you surgeon! I started exercises that didn't place any strain on the torso first (arms and legs). I'm working up from there. Just listen to your surgeon.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
