? Almost done my classes will i need extra studies ?

Recommended Posts

I am almost done my classes and then will see the surgeon. Now I have heard and read that many people were sent to do extra studies. So my question is will the surgeon send me for extra studies or will that have happened by now ????? Please let me know. Thanks

Unfortunately I think this fully depends on the combination of your bariatric program, your health, any other issues, results of your psych evaluation, etc..., so trying to determine what your specific combination will yield would be just a guess.

From what I've read it seems like each program does things just a little different than others. Then each insurance company (and which region you're in within that insurance program) has different requirements. And on top of that, each of us starts the journey with different health issues that require different attention.

If I had to guess I'd say now that you're scheduled to meet with the surgeon, you've been through all of the pre-surgery hurdles, but that is purely a guess and has no real basis behind it. BUT...you should definitely know when you'll be looking at surgery once you get done meeting with your surgeon, regardless of any extra steps they may add for you.

Thank you for your input. I know that nothing is guaranteed but at least I get opinions from people who have knowledge about the steps in this procedure than by just guessing or guesses from those who don't know . Thank you.

My surgeon uses a baritric coordinator who told me exactly what tests were required and I needed to have them scheduled before I met with the surgeon along with having the psy eval and third nutrition class completed. At my first meeting he then gave me the weight I needed to get down to before surgery would be scheduled.

Thanks Joy59. I have done the Psyc. Eval and have seen the nutritionist twice. I have the nutrition group meeting at the end of this month and then the medical group meeting talking about all the procedures beginning of next month. I already seen the Doctor in charge at the weight center and was told that she has no concerns on me continuing for the bypass and that the surgeon will speak to me at a later date about his recommendations for which surgery he feels may be right for me. I was only told to have blood work and to begin on a birth control to help regulate my cycle. But nothing else since. I have lost some weight since beginning the steps toward WLS. But that's it. I hope im close to the end and not that I still have tests and stuff to go.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
