RNY: can you FIT water IN? And HOW?

Recommended Posts

BAND TO RNY

1. I know you have to have 64 fl oz of Water everyday. I drink a lot, but not Water, I hate water unless I put some lemon juice in it. So, I drink a whole lotta kool-aid sweetened with Equal, my favorite sweetener. Can that count as water?

2. Also, I'm a Band hopefully to RNY so I know it is virtually impossible to get in 64 fl oz's of liquid in a day, as a Bandster. I've been unfilled for 6 years and drink all I want. As a RNYer, is it hard to get the liquid in?

3. And if it CAN go in, how often do you have to drink?

Do you have to sip? That must make it impossible to fit in your day when you can't drink before or after eating.

I have never liked Water and one of my doctors say that it is about "fluid". I drink Water with stevia - sometimes I put flavoring sometimes not. My favorite - peach roobios tea (a cup) in a quarter of water with stevia. Roobios is not really a tea - but a herb and it has medcinal qualities

Yes, it's difficult but not impossible to squeeze in 64 oz. of Fluid after RNY. Sipping every 5 minutes really helps.

And yes, sugar free, very low calorie drinks count as Water :)

I've had no problems even from day 1 getting in my fluids.

Yes, immediately after surgery I could only drink an ounce or two at a time, but even so, that didn't last long.

I now easily go through 80-100oz or more each day without even focusing on it. I have a 20oz bottle I reuse all the time so it is quite easy. 20 oz before Breakfast, 20 between Breakfast and lunch, 20 between lunch and dinner, 20 after dinner. Then my Protein shake for breakfast is another 11. And I usually take some to bed when I go and drink around half throughout the night.

As for what to drink - as already mentioned flavored Water counts just the same. I have pretty much every flavor of Mio, Crystal Light, Dasani etc... Water enhancers as well as most of the generic store brand versions too. I do still have regular ice water probably half of the time, but I like to mix things up with flavorings too as I then don't get cravings for soda, tea, energy drinks, etc...

Also - don't forget that your Protein shakes count toward that 64oz as well, so if you're drinking shakes, that liquid should be added to your totals.

Ladies, I drink SF Koolaid like a fish! I was really concerned that all I could drink was Water. I do love water, rarely. ????. You won't believe this, but that was a MAJOR factor in having the WLS. But now I CAN!!!!! Yay!!!!

I was just converted from band to RNY this past Tuesday. I'm definitely having a lot of trouble getting all my Fluid in. I just cannot sit here and drink all day long. I've probably been doing 45-50 oz per day. I am still only on Clear liquids so I count everything, even the sf popsicles. I can tell if I'm drinking too quickly, I start belching so I stop for a little bit and then continue on. I"m so glad that I have the next 6 weeks off of work so I can master the Fluid intake.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
