Had Lap-Band on Friday, May 4th

Recommended Posts

I just had my lap-band surgery on Friday. I'm feeling pretty good. A little soreness and gas pressure from the gas used during surgery. I'm having a tough time sleeping on my back because I'm too sore to sleep on my side. I'm not hungry at all, so I'm doing okay with liquids. Totally grossed out on the Advantage vanilla shake yesterday, but liked the chocolate one today. I thought I'd be able to go to work tomorrow, but now I'm thinking i will be too sore. Hope the weight starts falling off!

Hi lodum!!! Glad to see you up and posting so soon after surgery. I am scheduled for banding 5/16, which is a Wednesday, and I was going to go to work the following Monday... But I'm not sure yet, I may just take a day or two more. Glad to hear you are healing well! Welcome!!

Thanks for all the responses!

Devana, I hope I didn't break a rule already....

I mean the rules about eating and drinking. I know things work better and the weight comes off faster if you don't drink with meals, etc.

Thanks Devana. I thought I'd broken a board rule! I'm trying to do good with the liquids. yesterday I had a hard time getting much of anything down, but I'm doing better today. I plan on following the rules to a "T" so I can do the best! Let's see if I can keep that pace up!

Congrats :(

The weight may come off quick, or it may take awhile. Either way, you're losing it, so don't worry about it. Follow your doctor's orders exactly, even if it gets tough. This board is great support!

Hi lodum!! Congrats! I am VERY VERY curious to see if you do go back to work tomorrow and how it goes. What's your job? Reason being... I go on Friday for my surgery and I 'have to' go to work on Monday. (desk job) So please let us know how tomorrow goes and keep me posted on the recovery details!! Thanks!

I have decided not to go to work tomorrow. I think I need another day. I have a desk job too. I probably could go back if I had to, but would be uncomfortable. Of course, i also haven't taken any pain medicine today.

NicksWife22, Hi - I have a desk job - was banded on a Tuesday. I could have gone back on Thursday if I had to and, in fact, logged in from home and did some work from there. I didn't go into the office until Mon., but I COULD have. Good Luck! I would expect you to be fine!

You should NOT be 'pain' - you will be a little tender and perhaps even moving a little slowly, but should not be in pain by then...

I thought I would provide a follow-up now that it's Monday. I probably could have gone to work today. But, since my job is one where I can also work from home, I chose to stay home today. I'm a little sore (like doing too many sit ups), but getting around pretty good. I'm still having the gas discomfort, but not as often anymore. I agree, walking is the key to getting rid of the gas discomfort.

You guys are the best! Atleast now I have an idea of what to expect. Did you guys have a flight home or was your surgery local? I'm dreading the 6 hour flight from the west coast to the east coast. Atleast then I can be on pain meds and just sleep! Thanks so much for the update lodum!! Let us know about how you feel in a few hours. LOL

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
